Job Description : POSITION SUMMARY
The Principal is a visionary educational leader responsible for the development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of a comprehensive program of educational and student services. The Principal administers programs in accordance with board policies, statutory requirements, administrative rules and regulations, district leadership direction, consistent with collective bargaining agreements. The Principal will work with district administration to articulate the district’s strategic plan and provide visionary leadership necessary to attain the goals of the plan. The Principal serves as an advocate for staff, school, and school community, as appropriate. The Principal leads through an equity lens and demonstrates mastery of the skills, mindset, and aspirations needed to ensure all students receive an education that delivers on the promise of college, career, and life readiness.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership
Articulate and support the mission, goals, and policies of San Juan Island School District.
Articulate and model high expectations and motivate others to achieve high levels of performance.
Work collaboratively with staff, students, parents, and other members of the school community to help improve student learning using data, judgment, best practices and problem-solving skills.
Utilize leadership skills to work with staff, parents, and students to articulate, implement, achieve, and evaluate district and school improvement goals.
Be a self-critical and reflective practitioner.
In-depth knowledge of challenges facing rural school leaders and research-based practice.
Instructional Leadership
Ensures alignment and implementation of best instructional practices.
Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate level curricula and assessment practices.
Provide support and resources to school staff to employ effective classroom instructional strategies that meet student needs.
Analyzes and interprets multiple data sources to inform school-level improvement efforts.
Assists staff in using data to guide, modify and improve classroom teaching and learning.
Establish efficient schedules and other organizational routines that enhance instructional program improvement and student learning.
Demonstrate knowledge and use of technology as an essential learning tool in the classroom and overall instructional program and assess the use of technology.
Work cooperatively with district administrators and program specialists to meet student needs.
Provide a variety of opportunities for student involvement in clubs, government, and recreational activities.
Familiar with Washington State graduation pathways.
Supervision and Evaluation of Personnel
Monitors & assists staff in implementing effective instruction and assessment practices.
Maintain a confidential relationship with employees regarding individual personnel matters.
Provide appropriate, timely, and meaningful verbal and written feedback to certificated and classified staff regarding performance.
Develop a plan for assistance or remediation with certificated or classified staff when needed.
Be accessible for consultation with certificated and classified staff.
Demonstrate effective coaching, mentoring, and conferencing skills.
Create, implement, and evaluate the in-service and professional growth opportunities for staff.
Demonstrate knowledge of and uphold the laws, regulations, policies, and contractual obligations related to the supervision and evaluation of school personnel.
Knowledge of standards-based evaluation systems required. Knowledge of the Teacher/Principal Evaluation Program (TPEP), a plus.
Communication
Communicate frequently and effectively with all members of the school community and the district.
Maintain a positive relationship with students, staff, parents, and community by modeling respect, cooperation, and professionalism with others, recognizing the personal achievements and professional contributions of others and demonstrating knowledge of and sensitivity toward individuals and groups from all racial, ethnic, socio-economic, gender, disability, and lifestyle backgrounds.
Develop a school communications and family engagement plan to address important issues for the school, district, and community.
Report student progress in ongoing and meaningful way to parents.
Management and Administration
Work cooperatively with other district administrators and program specialists to secure resources and support for basic school needs, including the selection of personnel and appropriate work roles to staff.
Develop and monitor plans for the efficient and safe operation of the school facility and grounds.
Manage resources and budgets according to district and school program needs and involve others in decisions concerning school operations and safety.
Provide for physical, intellectual, and emotional safety for effective teaching and learning to take place.
Demonstrate knowledge of and uphold all policies, procedures, regulations, laws, and contractual obligations to effectively manage the school facility and instructional program.
Supervise and approve the preparation and timely submission of all school reports and forms for the district office, e.g., payroll, enrollment, work orders, requisitions, etc.
Human Resource Management
Screens, recommends selection, and assigns staff members consistent with job and qualification requirements, board policies, legal requirements, and provisions of collective bargaining agreement(s).
Provides effective induction of all staff members assuring each new member understands vision and goals of school, duties and responsibilities of position, performance requirements and expectations, school and corporate policies and procedures, and available support and assistance.
Provides or advocates for professional development of all staff members based on personal, professional, and organizational needs. Collaborates with staff members on identification of needs, opportunities, sources, and methods of providing professional development. Monitors and assesses the results of professional development to assure desired outcome.
Fosters self-reflection by each staff member for whom supervisory and evaluation responsibility is established. Monitors individual performance and provides feedback and coaching to support success and continuous growth.
Evaluates all staff members consistent with approved evaluation process.
Takes timely action to address performance concerns and deficiencies and provides plans of improvement and necessary support to correct performance concerns.
Professional Preparation and Growth
Work cooperatively with his or her supervisor to develop goals for personal growth and organizational improvement.
Demonstrate responsibility for pursuing goals and professional growth and demonstrate knowledge of the best practices and innovations in educational leadership, program development, and instruction.
Participate in essential professional growth opportunities and apply new knowledge and skills in practice.
Participate as a team member with colleagues, including initiating or sharing new ideas.
Seek suggestions for and respond positively to suggestions for professional improvement.
Other
Perform such other tasks and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree with a major in educational administration or appropriate related field.
Valid Washington State school administrative credential or the ability to obtain.
Knowledge and demonstrated skills in the use of technology for teaching and learning.
Experience in public school administration and supervision.
Effective communication skills; able to listen, speak and write confidently and proficiently.
Skill in instructional leadership and mentoring.
Experience in fiscal management within an educational organization.
Outstanding organizational and managerial skills. Ability to devise and use a systems approach to maintain order with a rapidly changing, often unpredictable schedule.
Minimum of 5 years of successful experience as a classroom teacher.
Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
EVALUATION
Works under general supervision of superintendent who is responsible for carrying out guidance and direction of board of directors. Annual evaluation will be based upon this job description, goals, and objectives specific to the school or the position, student achievement data, and performance of principal.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is confined to a work area; required to have precise control of fingers and hand movements; experiences constant interruptions and inflexible deadlines; and must be able to stoop, crouch, crawl, bend, kneel, stand for periods of time, and lift in order to assist a student with personal care. The employee is required to deal with distraught and/or angry persons and is exposed to infectious diseases carried by children. The noise level in the work environment is acceptable to this particular environment and can vary depending upon daily activity but will remain within acceptable ranges.
