Position : Youth Services Specialist
Job Description : Performs a variety of paraprofessional work in support of library services in the Youth Services Department. Works independently, and as a team, using established procedures.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives direct supervision from higher-level supervisory positions.
May exercise functional and technical supervision over volunteers in the absence of higher-level supervisory positions.
Essential and Marginal Functions
Essential and marginal functions and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
Essential Functions:
Works at public services desks as assigned; conducts simple reference interviews with library users in person or by telephone and assists them in locating materials and sources of information; instructs patrons in library usage; readers’ advisory.
Plans, prepares, promotes and implements youth services programming of interest to the community on a branch level.
Assists with collection development activities such as reading reviews, recommending library materials for purchase, weeding, and evaluating donation materials to determine what should be added to the collection, what should be sold, and what should be discarded.
Informs library patrons of library policy.
Marginal Functions:
May visit elementary, middle and high school contacts and classrooms to advertise programs, solicit volunteers, and provide information about youth services; schedules and conducts tours of library and reads stories for schools and groups visiting library; coordinates with schools on homework assignments.
May participate in community events to inform citizens about library services and programs. Builds and maintains partnerships with businesses and non-profit organizations in the community to promote and support programs, services and outreach.
Assists in compiling and maintaining information and data for a variety of statistical reports; assists in database cleanups.
Maintains orderly appearance of department and library premise; researches and maintains book displays; shelves books; straightens and sorts materials; assists in mending and cleaning books; displays graphics and handouts informing patrons of programs.
Participates in library opening and closing procedures.
Attends staff, departmental, library, and district-wide meetings; may participate in committee service and special events.
Promotes library services and programs.
Performs related duties as assigned.
May be required to drive personal or library vehicle on library business.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Basic child development.
Children’s literature.
Basic public library operations and organization.
Modern office methods, practices and procedures.
Skill in:
Keyboarding at a level necessary for successful job performance.
PC productivity applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and databases.
Ability to:
Demonstrate excellent customer service.
Work well with children, read stories aloud and plan and implement programming.
Provide readers’ advisory and reference services for library users.
Instruct library users and volunteers how to use library services, products and equipment.
Work with the public and staff effectively and efficiently, including handling difficult or dissatisfied people.
Learn various library computer procedures, specialized software applications, and operate library computer equipment and machinery.
Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Sort and file alpha-numerically and perform basic math computations.
Work a varied schedule, which may change periodically, including weekends and evenings, may work in other departments or libraries as needed.
Work well with a wide variety of people, and adapt to changes within the organization as they may occur.
Use initiative and judgment in a wide variety of situations.
Work independently and as part of a team.
Work under pressure in a busy atmosphere.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Public desk service in a central area with a high volume of public contact, handling multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
Normal physical activity including standing or sitting for extended periods, walking, bending, lifting up to 25 pounds, and pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds, upon occasion.
Keyboarding and working at a computer monitor required.
Phone usage, reading, speaking, and listening required.
Interaction with library users may include stressful situations related to enforcing library polices or resolving problems.
Two (2) years of college level course work (40 college credits) or two (2) years library experience or two (2) years of experience working with children.
