Position : Communications & Engagement Specialist

Job Description : Full-time communications, media, and public relations position responsible for strategic internal and external communications and marketing; digital, web, and social media content; brand management and recognition; community engagement and event planning; and technical assistance for staff, board, and member providers. This position is a leadership role and requires a compassionate commitment to primary prevention, equity, and economic and social justice, as well as the ability to engage all individuals and groups with humility and human dignity, using a trauma-informed, strengths-based lens.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Agency spokesperson
Facilitate media interviews and public speaking opportunities to include subject matter experts
Strategic, integrated, statewide proactive and reactive communications
Internal and external relations, including with media, member providers, stakeholders, policy makers, community partners, potential and established donors, government, and the general public
Create, share, and upload digital, web, and social media content
Email marketing to member providers and subscribers
Publication production using desktop publishing tools and/or graphic design software
Marketing and advertising to increase public awareness and connect people with resources
Maintain consistent messaging and brand across all communications channels
Review and edit products and publications to ensure brand consistency and recognition
Develop and regularly update messaging materials for UDVC and member programs
Measure and evaluate communications, identify areas for improvement and development
Provide training and technical assistance for staff, board, and member providers
Active participant on the UDVC Development Committee to diversify, identify and maintain sustainable funding
Plan and implement community engagement and public awareness events including the annual conference, advocacy days, and galas
Provide guidance to and participate in UDVC’s program work, including the leadership team, program coordinators, UDVC Board, the public policy consultant, and the Public Policy Committee
Provide leadership and perform other general UDVC staff duties related to the Annual Conference, Advocacy Days, and other duties as assigned
Participate in activities and training to improve understanding of domestic and intimate partner violence, equity, and anti-oppression
Perform all work in a culturally responsive manner consistent with UDVC’s mission

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience
Strong analytic and strategic-thinking skills and ability to create and monitor complex plans
Media and government relations and communications
Ability to share messages in a manner that inform, engage, and unite
Software and technology to include Adobe Creative Suite®, HTML, WordPress®, Microsoft 365®, Google Workspace®, databases, and online portals
Development and creation of public awareness campaigns
Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to adjust content and response for the respective platform and/or audience while maintaining consistent prevention-focused messaging

PREFERENCE
Preference may be given for the following qualifications:

Knowledge of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, stalking, prevention/intervention issues, as well as laws in these areas
Understanding of Utah’s Native People, LGBTQ+, and plural family communities, and the barriers they encounter in accessing safety and support
Experience addressing systematic oppression and the needs of marginalized and underserved populations, as well as advocating in partnership with those communities
Public speaking at large scale events and clear communication skills on complex topics
Ability to develop, lead and manage complex projects and initiatives
Experience, understanding, and commitment to advocating individually and systemically on behalf of survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and stalking
Understanding of systems of oppression as root causes of power-based violence
Experience with or understanding of the impact of trauma on individuals, organizations and systems

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires periodic in-state and out-of-state travel. Employees must have access to their own transportation.

Ability to travel throughout Utah independently, including rural areas, and occasionally out-of-state
Flexibility in scheduling, including overnight stays and extended days

WAGES AND BENEFITS
The Communications and Engagement Specialist is a full-time, salaried (exempt) position and is supervised by the Executive Director. Salary is negotiable ($50,000–$75,000), depending on experience, and includes the following benefits:

Improving domestic violence intervention and prevention in Utah and ensuring statewide coordinated, best-practice solutions are implemented and sustained are core responsibilities of a state domestic violence coalition. Additionally, state domestic violence coalitions are leaders in emerging issues and trends and provide technical assistance to domestic violence service providers around the state. Coalitions operate within a membership model, locally and nationally, build on the strength of local community programs, and identify and address statewide needs, including funding, resources, and legislation.
