Job Description : Director of Football Equipment Operations
Job Summary
The Director of Equipment Operations reports to the Director of Football Operations. Under the Director of Football Operations’ general supervision, the incumbent develops and supervises policies, logistics, and procedures related to Football Equipment Operations and coordinates marketing strategies and possible revenue streams within the athletic department’s respective programs. The Director of Equipment Operations designs, delivers, evaluates, and manages standard and extraordinary equipment and branding experiences for NCAA Division I recruits, student-athletes, coaches, administrators, alumni, and fans.
Essential Functions

Equipment Management

Responsible for the use, security, and maintenance of equipment, apparel, and shoes according to established departmental policies and procedures within the safety standards set by the NCAA, AEMA, and risk management.
Develops and implements policies and procedures aligned with University and NCAA audit standards, and maintains an accurate inventory and accounting to ensure the appropriate use of resources.
Responsible for the financial management of the equipment and apparel budget and maintains a professional relationship with vendors.
Oversees the procurement, maintenance, distribution, and accountability of all football equipment and apparel.
Manage NCAA equipment safety protocols, including regular inspection and maintenance of equipment and annual reconditioning of football helmets.
Oversees the SAB Equipment Room operation and inventory, including the laundering of workout attire and ensuring that student-athletes, coaches, and staff are appropriately outfitted for workouts, practices, games, and related activities.
Stays up to date on technology and equipment developments that may affect team safety, performance, attitude, and unity.

Staffing and Supervising Equipment Managers

Supervise football equipment personnel—graduate assistants and student workers—regarding the design and management of equipment related activities and services.
Responsible for hiring, training, and supervising equipment managers and student employees responsible for carrying out the football program’s day-to-day equipment operations.
Oversees professional and career development of all football equipment operations personnel by facilitating frequent on-campus collaboration, organizing bi-annual trips to the AEMA convention, assisting all with the AEMA certification process, and supporting the student manager internship program.

Event and Travel Management

Responsible for the planning and preparation of equipment set up and takedown for practices, competitions, and football-related activities.
Coordinates and carries out travel logistics, including packing and shipping equipment, and coordinating with hotel and stadium personnel before team arrival.
Hosts visiting teams and coordinates with their staff regarding preparation and support for football student-athletes and coaches for all equipment (uniforms, practice clothes, sport-specific gear, protective gear, and travel gear).
Contracts and pays truck drivers and coordinates travel routes, departures, and arrival times, and manages the trailer’s loading and unloading throughout the football season.
Responsible for all vehicles managed by equipment operations, including trucks, vans, golf carts, and snowmobiles.
Assists with the planning, preparing, and executing recruiting activities, including facility tours, photoshoots, and snowmobiling.
Assists in the design and implementation of summer youth sports camps, coaches clinics, NFL Pro Day, and the senior banquet.

Brand Management

Collaborates with the Athletic Department Creative Services, Communications, Marketing, Social Media, Development, and University licensing to design and implement brand strategy.
Creates style guides for uniforms, apparel, and logos that reflect the brand vision and are consistent with the department, university standards, and historical accuracy.
Coordinates with vendors, specifically Nike, to get critical input on how product design and implementation can be improved, more efficient, and cost-effective.
Performs regular market research studies on intercollegiate equipment and athletic apparel trends.
Assists with the planning, scheduling, and execution of recruit and student-athlete photoshoots.
Coordinates with the BYU Bookstore representatives to align apparel distributions and special events with in-store retail offerings and marketing displays.
Supports departmental social media outreach by creating content specific to equipment operations and other channels, as requested by creative services.

Facility Management – SAB

Assists with the planning, scheduling, maintenance, and safety of equipment and football facilities, including the SAB equipment room, the football locker room, the outdoor practice field, and the indoor practice field (IPF).
Prepares athletic facilities for internal and external events, including setup and breakdown for competitions and other departmental activities.
Coordinates with the University Police regarding the internal and external access for restricted doors within the west wing of the SAB and the IPF, and manages access to secure areas (locker room, equipment room – SAB, IPF, training room, west entrance, bay doors, and north building entrance/exit).
Assists in the development and implementation of short- and long-term facility maintenance plans.
Coordinates the regular inspections of laundering equipment, including the computer-controlled chemical dispensing system and related materials.

Mentor football student-athletes

Learn the names and develop relationships with all football student-athletes
Serve as an advocate for student-athlete well-being and diversity
Serve as a resource and mentor for student-athletes

Work one-on-one with student-athletes to assist in their transition from high school and missions to BYU
Work one-on-one with student-athletes to help develop their leadership skills and work through difficult team, individual and family situations

Work with student-athletes who did not graduate from BYU to help them return and complete their degree
Create and implement individual development plans to ensure student-athletes’ needs are addressed and met as they relate to academics and/or personal goals
Help student-athletes acclimate to their roles, both on and off the field
Help develop and maintain team culture

Special Assignments

Work closely with Director of Football Operations as needed on special assignments

Compliance

Be well-informed on NCAA rules
Have a working knowledge of and support and help ensure that football staff and coaches comply with the following:

NCAA and sport policies, specifically those related to the football
BYU Athletics and BYU policies and procedures.

Work with compliance directors to satisfy departmental requirements
Complete any necessary periodical NCAA forms

Education/Experience
Minimum Required: Bachelor’s degree and 1 year Division 1 or Professional athletic playing experience or 1 year Division 1 or Professional job experience or equivalent combination of education/experience.
Preferred: Bachelor’s and 5 years of Division 1 or Professional Football playing or job experience. 4-5 years related work experience and Athletic Equipment Manger Certification (AEMA).
