ACCOUNTABLE TO: Police Services Manager

STATUS: On-Call, non-union, rotating shifts, must be available for all shifts

Primary Purpose of Position: Under general supervision, takes information in person and over the phone and prepares and maintains police reports and records for the Missoula Police Department. Education
On-Call Police Support Specialist – Any combination of education and training equivalent to graduation from high school and two years clerical experience including significant public contact. Must be able to pass Police background investigation and sign statement of confidentiality. Must be available to work all shifts. About Our Job

Typical job duties include, but are not limited to:
Take initial complaints and complete incident reports for all non-emergency calls about crimes not in progress; professionally and sensitively handle distressed citizens making complaints; gather information; write comprehensive and concise reports.

Code and input case and incident reports and records into department software programs and spreadsheets to maintain accurate and current records of criminal activities; prepare reports for monthly reporting to the State of Montana and the Federal Bureau of Investigation; disseminate a variety of records and reports for law enforcement officers, City agencies, other authorized personnel and agencies.

Enter information on NCIC/CJIN computer network within prescribed time limits; query system to obtain information on driving records and criminal histories for authorized personnel; relay appropriate information to officers and authorized personnel via electronic communication, in person or via two-way radio.

Input discrepancies and hazards, and abandoned and towed vehicles into shared spreadsheets; notify on-call Street Division personnel for snow removal, flooding, and deicing; monitor holding cells and parking lot via closed circuit television monitor.

Perform a variety of clerical support work including filing, answering telephones, assisting customers, other City personnel, co-workers and authorized personnel; perform all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to learn basic functions of department and roles of department personnel;

Ability to learn the coding system used to identify the various crimes and criminal activities in the department records system, and state and federal criminal records reporting systems;

Adhere to confidentiality requirements of police records and information;

Ability to learn the policies, goals, and procedures of the Missoula Police Department;

Knowledge of law enforcement record keeping and communications principles, methods, techniques, and practices;

Skill in utilizing office equipment, including personal computers, copying machines, printers, and telephones.

Ability to promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with City safety policies;

Ability to learn policies and procedures of operating a two-way radio;

Ability to learn Police Department specific computer programs;

Skill in understanding and interpreting complex regulations, standards, and guidelines;

Strong communication skills in person, in writing, on the telephone and on a two-way radio;

Ability to prepare reports documenting the facts and actions regarding criminal and civil law enforcement incidents;

Skill in completing and maintaining CJIN certification requirements provided by the Police Department;

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City employees, other law enforcement agencies, criminal justice system staff, and citizens.
