We are looking for a Principal Advisor – Research & Development (R&D) Project Delivery to facilitate and coordinate the planning, execution, monitoring and closure/handover of a broad range of innovative projects across all technical disciplines in the Rio Tinto Copper (RTC) assets. This role works closely with Asset & Study teams and external parties to deliver value through hands on-execution, support, collaboration, and communication. Projects will be heavily focused on sustainability, critical minerals recovery, tailings valorization, and full-value mining.

Reporting to the Manager – Research & Development and working in a collaborative community and exciting environment within the Copper Research & Development team, you will be:
Managing assigned site-based R&D projects by leading and coordinating the delivery of specific projects, being responsible for all aspects of the project, from initiation to implementation and project completion. These projects typically range from 3 to 18-month duration and budget $50,000 to >$1.5m
Working closely with asset-based teams to support (assure) delivery of R&D funded projects and related initiatives, by coaching and mentoring, facilitating or participating in project shaping and detailed planning
Engaging broadly and contributing to developing and delivering projects that create value and competitive advantage in specific technical disciplines, with interfaces to the Rio Tinto Centers of Excellence, asset teams, technical discipline teams, other product groups
Utilizing analytical / problem solving / project leading tools and soft skills to facilitate working sessions to plan, implement and deliver projects
Supporting project monitoring and reporting
Identifying, evaluating, and supporting solving project issues – bottlenecks, conflicts, resourcing, procurement, etc., impacting progress and the delivery of value
Collaborating with the R&D team to develop and improve tools, processes, and systems to enable successful management and execution of the RTC R&D portfolio
Performing as a credible technical resource across the RTC R&D portfolio
What you’ll bring
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Metallurgical, Chemical Engineering, Geoscience or relevant work experience
At least 5 years experience in metallurgical processing or hydrometallurgical or other industrial operations
Experience in project management/delivery
Proven stakeholder engagement and management across multiple groups
It will also be beneficial if you have:
Recognized qualifications in Project Management
Experience with the recovery of critical minerals
Experience in program or portfolio management, in particular, utilizing project management tools
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Experience with intellectual property and/or technology transfer
Financial and business acumen in particular project valuation
