Job Description : Uinta Academy is one of the nation’s leading multi-dimensional residential treatment centers for adolescent girls. We specialize with girls who struggle with relationships or attachment issues and/or who have experienced trauma. Uinta Academy is a clinically intense treatment program that is balanced by a warm, nurturing, family-style environment. Located in Cache Valley, Utah, we currently serve approximately 58 teenage girls who whose parents have placed them voluntarily in our care; our students are not adjudicated. The average length of stay for our students is 14 months, so our teachers have the rewarding experience of seeing our students make significant progress in school. Our academic program is fully accredited by AdvancED for the state of Utah. Although we are accredited, our academic department has a small faculty and our program is individualized, so teacher input about our students and their academic needs is highly valued. Due to the therapeutic nature of our program, our school teachers are not alone in the classroom; up to four program staff are present in each classroom, depending on the number of students and their therapeutic needs.
Qualifications:
We are currently seeking a licensed, secondary ed. social studies or history teacher. We will accept secondary teaching licenses from any state with which the Utah Department of Education has a reciprocal program. First-year teachers are encouraged to apply. Due to the varying nature of our students’ abilities, applicants should feel confident teaching social studies concepts across a variety of subject matter and age levels. Experience with the online education system CANVAS is preferred, but it is not required.
Requirements:A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and a current secondary teaching license with a social studies or history endorsement are required. A passing PRAXIS score in social studies is also required; a passing PRAXIS PLT score is required within the first three years of licensure. The position is full-time, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (average hours, subject to minor changes) with occasional extra-curricular participation required in the evenings. 66% of the time is in-classroom teaching, usually on a one-on-one basis. 34% of the time involves grading and curriculum development.
