Job Description : Duties

Care of Government and privately owned horses at the Equestrian Center.
Curries and brushes horses; combs mane and tail; cleans hoofs.
Maintains equipment, e.g., saddles, bridles, etc., and makes minor repairs to fences and facility.
Feeds, waters, and exercises horses.
Saddles horses for riders.
Guides trail rides.
Grains and turns horses in and out of the corral area.
Cleans stalls and stables area; cleans water tanks in full care, partial care and pasture areas.
Observes horses for obvious changes in behavior, appearance, and activity; informs supervisor if necessary.
Drives vehicles as necessary.
Schedules rental riding, guided trail rides, and other events.
Collects money from rental fees, lesson fees, and event fees.
Prepares reports and other statistical and financial data pertaining to the stables for items such as grain, hay, number of horses rented, etc.
Assists in a variety of duties to help assure success of horse shows and Equestrian Center Activities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
This is a developmental position having known promotion potential to the Tractor Operator (Animal Caretaker) NA-5705-06 level (04849).
Upon completion of at least 6 months experience as Animal Caretaker NA-5048-03, training on the operation of a field-type tractor and associated equipment, as well as demonstrated the ability to operate equipment in a safe manner, the incumbent may be non-competitively promoted to the higher pay grade.

THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO INTERNAL NAF USAFA EMPLOYEES AND MILITARY SPOUSE PREFERENCE ONLY.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience:

Applicant must have experience in responsible clerical work of any kind.
This should include demonstrated ability to perform common arithmetical problems making change when receiving payments from customers.
Ability to follow simple written or oral instructions with minor supervision.
Applicant must be able to perform the full range of cleaning duties such as cleaning stables, laying fresh bedding, cleaning water tanks and pasture areas.
Must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner.
Knowledge of horse care is required.
Work is performed inside and outside.
Subject to the elements of weather such as exposure to sun, wind, dust, soils, rain and snow, and hazards of equipment, contagious diseases, and horse related injuries such as exposure to bites, scratches, kicks and animal waste.

Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution. FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
