Job Description : The College of Forestry is seeking a Assistant/Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The College of Forestry’s Associate/Assistant Dean for Inclusive Excellence and Director of College of Forestry’s Tribal Initiatives (AD) is essential to achieving the college’s vision for inclusive excellence among students, staff, and faculty, and for building meaningful and lasting academic, economic, ethical, social, and cultural collaborations with underserved people across the globe, with an emphasis on the Pacific Northwest region. This position is also integral to Oregon State University’s vision to be a collaborative, inclusive, and caring community that strives for justice and equitable opportunities in everything we do; that creates a welcoming environment and enables success for people from all backgrounds and cultures; and that shares common, fundamental values grounded in social justice, civility, and respect while looking to our diversity as a source of enrichment and strength. This position further complements investments in Native American initiatives across the university in teaching, research, outreach, and student services.

The AD position’s goals are to foster and enhance the cultural humility of the college through their leadership, and to co-generate policies and practices that advance diversity, equity, inclusion and justice for all peoples and cultures. The incumbent provides leadership, management, and direction for the college including setting goals and priorities for DEIJ and student support services; developing and managing budgets; directing personnel, facilities, equipment, programs and other resources; and advising on compliance in principle and practice associated with Indigenous / Tribal sovereignty and related university and college policies, and state and federal regulations. The incumbent works in close collaboration with all communities within the college and reports directly to the dean. The incumbent engages with Indigenous Nations (recognized, non-recognized, and other Indigenous groups) and people on behalf of the college; guides initiatives and programming designed to enhance academic support for and improve outreach, retention, empowerment and graduation rates of underserved graduate and undergraduate students; advises on research, education, and outreach programming that advances both Indigenous Knowledge systems and standard science systems; and collaborates with university partners on shared goals of advancing and sustaining student access and success at OSU. Maintaining professional relationships and collaborations with an array of offices and colleagues is essential for meeting the College’s and this position’s goals.

As an executive team member, the Associate/Assistant Dean for Inclusive Excellence has oversight of the College’s DEI Initiatives, as well as programs that provide student support services at the college-level with a focus on underserved student populations. The AD enforces policies and performance standards, and advises faculty, administrators and students regarding university policies and procedures related to student success. The AD determines resource needs and priorities and implements programs and initiatives in alignment with the College strategic plan and goals.
Position Duties
50% Inclusive Excellence
Provide leadership, expertise, operational administration, strategic planning and scholarship that fosters DEIJ and student success. This broad oversight includes:
Oversight of student support programming through supervision of the Director for Student Success, and represent the college through membership on relevant university-level committees and boards.
Develop and lead the implementation of inclusive excellence initiatives that serve all communities within and served by the college.
Identify gaps in service and teaching that hinder student success and collaborates with others to develop programs and initiatives to bridge those gaps.
Collaborate with others to improve recruitment and retention, including the development of collaborative/pathway programs with community colleges and other universities.
Oversee the implementation of CoF DEI strategic plan; collaborate with college administration to better incorporate DEI into hiring plans; collaborate with faculty to incorporate DEIJ into curricula, promotion and tenure, and position descriptions.
Work with partners at the OSU Foundation to secure funding for DEIJ initiatives.
Serve as the College representative to the University and the state of Oregon on matters related to DEIJ.
Mentor faculty, staff and students regarding DEIJ principles and practices.

40% Tribal Initiatives
Provide leadership, expertise, operational administration, strategic planning and scholarship to develop sustainable relationships with Indigenous Nations and Peoples on behalf of the college. Specific responsibilities include:
Serve as the college’s liaison with Indigenous sovereign Nations (recognized, non-recognized and other Indigenous groups) and Tribal colleges, with an emphasis on the PNW region and the nine Sovereign Tribes of Oregon.
Establish formal relationships by co-developing MOUs and/or Data Sharing Agreements (DSAs) between the college and Indigenous Nations, beginning with each of the nine Tribes of Oregon.
Establish an Indigenous natural resource office within the college that facilitates Indigenous students’ successes including a focus on recruitment, retention, graduation and employment; serves as a resource for Tribes and other institutions of government or enterprise seeking to develop Indigenous initiatives on forest lands located in Oregon; and promotes holistic and reciprocal relationships that embody the Land Grant mission and honor Indigenous sovereignty.
Collaborate with University offices and programs on the development and implementation of initiatives associated with the OSU Native / Indigenous Strategic Proposal.
Facilitate trans-cultural collaboration to explore and develop initiatives that would advance higher education in the College of Forestry and strengthen relations with the nine Tribes of Oregon and other Indigenous Nations and People.
Provide professional development opportunities and advise college faculty on collaborating with Indigenous Nations and peoples in curricula, research and outreach activities.
10% Service
May contribute to the academic programs of the college through teaching and scholarship.
May conduct research and scholarship that advances our understanding of forestry, ecology, ecosystems, and society from a lens of traditional ecological knowledge.
Participates in faculty governance and professional service.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
Experience working with underserved populations in a higher education setting.
Demonstrated leadership skills to set challenging and attainable goals, to establish priorities, and work with and inspire others in a collegial manner.
Demonstrated experience collaborating successfully with Indigenous Nations and Peoples.
Demonstrated experience collaborating with others to set and achieve justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion goals.
Demonstrated experience leading a unit, supervising a complex program, or managing a grant, or other relevant expertise.
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

For appointment at the Assistant Dean level:
Bachelor’s degree with significant relevant experience; OR Master’s degree.
For appointment at the Associate Dean level:
PhD or equivalent terminal degree. Years of service and research distinction equivalent to tenured Associate Professor or full Professor rank.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Experience developing and leading programs that improve recruitment, retention, and graduation rates for indigenous students and/or other underrepresented students.
Knowledge of best practices in student services, experiential learning, and advising.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Evening and weekend hours may be required.
This position requires occasional travel.
Working in rough terrain out of doors may be required for some educational, research, and outreach activities.
