The Office of Boulder County Commissioners is hiring their next Chief of Staff, this is a unique opportunity to work directly with the County Commissioners.

This exempt, at-will position works at the direction of a three-member elected
Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) as their primary strategist, close advisor and manager of intergovernmental relationships. In addition, this position works closely with the County Administrator, Chief Financial Officer, County Attorney, Department Directors and other Elected Officials, particularly on state and federal legislative issues and cross-jurisdictional issues. The role supervises staff in the county commissioners’ office in the areas of administration, policy, public records and public information.

The ideal candidate will exhibit excellent and reliable interpersonal and communication skills, sound work ethic, and strong political acumen, and will be approachable, responsive and trustworthy. The leader in this position will be able to build, maintain and nurture existing and new relationships with staff at all levels and with other government agencies.

This role needs a critical and strategic thinker who will collaborate, influence and provide direction to accomplish the Commissioners’ policy objectives. Collaboration across the county organization and with a diverse group of stakeholders outside the organization is necessary for success.

This is a full-time, benefitted position. This position will work Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm, with some flexibility. This position will work remote and on-site, with some evening work required in the Downtown courthouse, located at 1325 Pearl St., Boulder CO 80302. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is exempt.
As of December 1, 2021, Boulder County requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or request an approved accommodation within ten days of accepting an offer of employment. A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after completion of a two-dose mRNA series or one dose of Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work. Hiring Salary Range: $140,000.00 – $160,000.00 Annually

Examples of Duties

Extensive knowledge of management principles, organizational skills and the ability to apply these to public administration.

Advanced understanding of county level organizational structure and county statutory authority

Political Acumen

Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Change management experience.

Legal Background (preferred); Thorough knowledge of Colorado open meetings and open records legal framework

Working knowledge of project management and familiarity with documentation and progress reporting.

Proficiency in communications or other internal support services.

Strong business and financial acumen

Familiarity with or willingness to learn the Pacific Education Group’s Courageous Conversation About Race protocol and the Government Alliance for Racial Equity frameworks and tool sets.

Education and Experience:

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a
minimum
of 9 years of combined education and experience, which includes a total of five years of progressively responsible experience in public sector administration and/or executive management, with at least three of those years supervising and/or leading teams and a
Bachelor’s Degree.

Applicants must have a valid State of Colorado identification card and be willing to sign financial disclosure and confidentiality documents related to accessing the county’s financial and/or HR systems

This position requires a high degree of sensitivity and understanding of specific barriers that prevent access and engagement by people with different racial or ethnic backgrounds, people who are LBGTQ+, have one or more disabilities or whose first language may be a language other than English. Bilingual language skills preferred. Bicultural lived experience preferred.

Experience working in Boulder County or another local government setting is preferred.
