YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

As a member of the Conservation Science and Planning Team within TNC’s Colorado Business Unit, the Conservation Ecologist is a creative and collaborative problem-solver who is motivated and energized by engaging in and supporting science-based, climate-resilient conservation of Colorado’s native species, habitats, and ecosystems. They provide technical and scientific support and leadership for land and water conservation projects, strategies, and plans by using expert knowledge, principles of conservation ecology, and science-based adaptive management frameworks. They also incorporate the latest scientific developments into the evolving evidence base for Colorado’s conservation efforts, collaborate strategically with a broad and inclusive scientific community, leverage results to advance key conservation initiatives, continuously expand their own skills and experience, and communicate effectively to diverse audiences including partners, funders, decision-makers, and the public.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Conservation Ecologist designs and conducts a wide variety of field and desktop ecological analyses and evaluations, leveraging results to advance key conservation initiatives. They both lead and assist with conservation planning and prioritization, develop adaptive management and monitoring frameworks, and support strategic partnerships. They also serve on interdisciplinary teams, lead and assist with project management, manage external partners and contractors, and engage in science communication to diverse audiences. The Conservation Ecologist may supervise staff and volunteers depending on team structure and business needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

Within the scope of the position, the Conservation Ecologist will:

Lead and assist with data collection, analysis, and interpretation to inform and prioritize land and water conservation.
Conduct field assessments, meetings, and outreach activities at project locations throughout Colorado. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
Develop adaptive management and monitoring plans, conceptual models, and conservation strategies.
Maintain strong, current, and objective science foundations for conservation work by staying current on new scientific developments, designing and implementing assessments to address key knowledge gaps for conservation strategies and initiatives, and establishing and maintaining strategic scientific partnerships with collaborators.
Integrate new technologies and innovative approaches for data collection, management, analysis, and visualization.
Administer and coordinate programs within a conservation strategy or initiative.
Deliver conservation tools, data, field services, and training to staff and partners.
Communicate science-based conservation information clearly and effectively using a variety of media.
Assist with fundraising from public and private sources.
May lead staff, interns, partners, contractors, or volunteers on a project basis.
May manage a grant, contract, or request for proposal.
May supervise staff.

Work Environment and Schedule

Position will have a hybrid work arrangement split between employee’s home office and TNC’s office in Boulder, CO.
Employee will be expected to travel to field sites across Colorado and potentially outside of the state, with frequency determined by business need. Occasional overnight travel is expected. Position requires working safely outdoors with ability to hike over rough terrain for extended periods of time in poor weather conditions in remote locations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The equivalent combination of a Master’s degree in science-related field and 2 years of experience.
Experience leading and working with cross-functional teams.
Experience synthesizing, interpreting, and communicating scientific information.
Experience preparing reports of findings.
Record of peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals.
Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
Valid driver’s license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate degree (Master’s or PhD) in Ecology, Conservation Biology, Natural Resource Management, or related field and at least 3-5 years’ experience in plant and/or wildlife conservation, land protection, natural resource management, conservation planning, or similar work.
Knowledge of current conservation and natural resource issues in Colorado and the broader Western U.S., and experience recommending conservation actions based on results of scientific analyses.
Specific experience in some or all of the following areas: identification of Colorado plant and wildlife species, collection and analysis of ecological data including inventory and monitoring, wildlife management and conservation, habitat classification, conservation planning including development/implementation of management plans (experience with Conservation By Design 2.0 appreciated), GIS mapping and analysis, GPS navigation and data collection, and experimental design.
Experience with the following software: MS Office Suite and ArcGIS 10.X. Experience with ArcPro, ArcCollector, and statistical software appreciated.
Strong project management skills with a proven record of developing and managing multiple projects of varying complexity to completion.
Strong science communication experience, including technical reports and plans, presentations and trainings to technical and non-technical audiences, and non-technical summaries of scientific methods, concepts, and results.
Experience managing staff, contractors, collaborators, and/or volunteers.
Experience establishing and maintaining excellent working partnerships with internal and external collaborators.
Experience working with fundraisers and contributing to public and/or private fundraising efforts.
Experience with and/or commitment to integrating and upholding principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Experience with and/or commitment to support engagement with Tribal Nations and other Indigenous Communities.
Basic knowledge of real estate transactions associated with land protection (e.g., conservation easements).
Ability to communicate clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English.
Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.

SALARY INFORMATION

Estimated starting salary: $79,500-$84,500/annually, dependent on qualifications and experience.
