Hard-workers.Company Bio: The company is called Fields & Sons, Inc. We are a commercial salmon fishing business.We operate a large commercial salmon fishing gillnet operation on the west side of Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska approximately 80 air miles from the town of Kodiak. (Search Kodiak, Alaska on Google). We’ve been fishing here since 1963.Each summer F&S hires approximately 12 crewmen to assist in the harvest of salmon. All employees are professing Christians.Period of employment: The contract period is approximately 120 days. But, F&S will attempt to work with college schedules for start and end dates.Compensation: Housing & food is free. You will be living with the other crew on the island and all meals are taken care of. Compensation is based on a percentage of the catch, though there is a bare minimum guarantee of $7,200 when a 120-day contract is completed. (We are the only fishing operation we know of that offers a guarantee)Compensation over the past 3 years has averaged approximately $10,000 for the contract period, though it could be higher or lower depending on how many fish we catch. Also, with the completion of the contract, a bonus of $500.00 toward airfare is awarded.The work: The work involves hard physical labor and may require a variety of skills including welding, carpentry, motor operation, net repair as well as harvesting salmon. Although the operation is shore-based, much of the work is out on the water in small vessels. In the past, we’ve hired & worked with a lot of college students or recent graduates who have worked at our operation multiple years in a row to pay off school**The following is an excerpt from the Fields & Sons, Inc. employment contract: (a) Fishing duties include, by way of example and not limitation, loading and unloading supply vessels, gear preparation, dropping anchors, picking and caring for fish product, cleaning the fishing nets and gear, repair, maintenance, and storage of gear and equipment, and repair and maintenance of the skiffs and attached equipment, including painting. Operation of tractors, outboard motors, generators, and other mechanical equipment. Repairing gear at seasons end, storing gear, and preparing gear for the following season.(b) Site duties include, by way of example and not limitation, transportation, maintenance and storage of food, fuel, gear and equipment. Construction, maintenance, painting and repair of Owner’s shore support facilities in Kodiak and Uyak Bay. Gardening, lawn care, butchering, wood gathering and domestic tasks while staying at the Uyak sites. Maintenance and preparation of shore facilities for the following season.Conduct of Crewman. Crewman at all times shall conduct himself in an orderly, faithful, honorable and sober manner, and shall perform diligently the duties assigned to him by the site operators. Crewman acknowledges that he has been advised that the following behavior is prohibited:(a) Consumption of alcohol during the term of the contract whether on board Fields & Sons’ skiffs or any other vessel, while staying at the site, or at any time during the contract period while away from site operators and site.(b) Fighting any person associated with Fields & Sons or any other person during the contract period.(c) Stealing anything from anyone at the site, or anything from anyone that comes in contact with Crewman while Crewman is employed by Fields & Sons.(d) Use of language that is lewd, crass, profane or inappropriate for children to hear.(e) Possession of any firearm or shooting any firearm while at the site, unless with one of the site operators’ permission.(f) Failure to obey all lawful commands of site operators in a timely and responsible manner.(g) Purchasing any items whatsoever on behalf of Fields & Sons or creating any liens upon Fields & Sons property without the specific written permission of Weston Fields, Duncan Fields or Wallace Fields.(h) Violating, or causing Fields & Sons to violate, any federal, state or local statute or regulation, including, but not limited to, regulations forbidding the retention of any prohibited species or the harassment of any protected species.(I) POSSESSION OF ANY ILLEGAL OR CONTROLLED DRUG OR SUBSTANCE, INCLUDING MARIJUANA OR COCAINE, DURING THE TERM OF THIS CONTRACT. DISCOVERY OF ANY SUCH DRUG OR SUBSTANCE IN A CREWMAN’S POSSESSION IS CAUSE FOR IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL. CREWMAN AGREES THAT HIS SHARE OF FISHING PROCEEDS SHALL BE FORFEITED AND HE FURTHER AGREES TO INDEMNIFY FIELDS & SONS OR SITE OPERATORS FROM ANY FINE, COSTS, ATTORNEY FEES, SEIZURE OR FORFEITURE ARISING OUT OF THE CREWMAN’S POSSESSION OF SUCH DRUG OR SUBSTANCE.HOW TO APPLY: We have an online application that you will need to fill out and then we would love to speak with you over the phone if we feel you could be a good fit.
