Job Description : Job Overview: The residential custodian provides janitorial services to maintain the Montana State Hospital building in a clean and orderly condition. Responsibilities include cleaning and disinfecting restrooms, residences, offices, conference rooms, common areas and dining facilities; restocking supplies and maintaining inventory of paper products and cleaning supplies; and checking building areas for safety hazards such as broken glass and disposing of appropriately.

Essential Duties or Responsibilities:
Cleaning and Maintenance (80%)
Cleans and disinfects restrooms, residences, offices, conference rooms, common areas and dining facilities.
Vacuums and mops floors and performs regular floor maintenance including spot cleaning carpets and/or floor strip, seal, and finish.
Cleans walls, windows, and curtains.
Restocks supplies and maintains inventory of paper products and cleaning supplies.
Advises supervisor of any inventory shortages or other equipment maintenance issues.

2. Documentation & Safety (15%)
Follows cleaning schedule and updates custodial logbook for supervisor review.
Maintains a log of current information on the safe handling of cleaning chemicals, hazards, and first aid procedures.
Restricts access to stored chemicals and supplies to prevent misuse by unauthorized personnel and residents.
Checks building areas for safety hazards such as broken glass and disposes of appropriately.
Reports unusual patient behavior to nursing staff.
Provides emergency treatment such a cardiopulmonary resuscitation and choking victim procedures (Heimlich maneuver).

3. Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

Physical and Environmental Demands: Must be able to perform physical labor, stand and walk entire shift, and lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, fumes, dirt and dust. Potential risk exposure to blood and body fluids, air borne diseases, HIV, Hepatitis, and Tuberculosis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(required for first day of work)
General knowledge of janitorial procedures and operating various pieces of cleaning equipment such as a high-speed buffer, vacuum, and carpet and upholstery machines.
Skills in proper cleaning techniques.
Ability to work co-operatively with others and protect patients’ rights and confidentiality.
Ability to be comfortable working around mentally ill and security risk patients.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to demonstrate a friendly “can do” attitude.

Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications:
High School or GED.
One year janitorial, housekeeping, or custodial experience preferred.
