General position overview:

The nonprofit Center for Biological Diversity seeks an experienced, strategic, creative, data-driven Digital Director to lead, expand and manage our large, dynamic and rapidly growing digital system. We view our digital work as an integral part of our pursuit to move social and political systems to protect wildlife and wild places.

Primary focus will be leveraging a highly effective, cohesive, sustainable and integrated digital experience across all platforms, including oversight of our email programs, web site, mobile presence, text/SMS, and social media with a strong emphasis on long-term data metrics aimed at optimizing our impact and fundraising. Other key duties include identifying and executing viable new digital strategies; recruitment and retention of new supporters and members; building out actionable data architecture; and data-driven analysis of user engagement and advocacy across multiple platforms.

The job requires sound judgement and a collaborative spirit, significant experience in digital organizing, a proven track record of leading and executing creative and effective digital campaigns, a commitment to managing a team that’s supported and engaged, demonstrated experience in data tracking and management, and a passion for mobilizing people to action. Our Digital Director will be well-versed in digital strategies and closely tracking best practices and emerging trends, technologies and implementation strategies.

We’re looking for someone who will build up our digital team and work closely with others in the organization to drive activism, increase fundraising, protect the health and vitality of our digital audience, and maintain the Center’s unique voice, brand and position in the environmental movement.

The Digital Director supervises the Digital team and reports to the Executive Director while working in close collaboration with other communications, development, IT, organizing and conservation staff.

Main duties:
Ensure that our digital platforms – including email, texting, video, social media and web – are integrated and maximized to the strengths of each to serve our conservation, membership, fundraising and organizing goals.
Develop a deep working knowledge of member and activist data, strategize best practices for data analysis, and investigate potential benefits of additional email/text segmentation and targeting while ensuring the overall health and digital vitality of all supporters in support of overall Center priorities.
Build actionable data architecture fundamental to assembling reports critical to assessing list health, email performance, supporter engagement/interests/retention, and effectively optimizing digital tactics including more A/B and multivariate testing.
Participate in the Center’s rapid-response strategy, collaborating with Media team and Center leadership.
Analyze digital performance of all platforms and develop and implement recommendations for improvement, including ongoing monitoring of emerging digital platforms to determine which would be beneficial for the Center.
Enhance and expand systems for list recruitment, curation, retention and segmentation with an emphasis on improving performance.
Oversee the health of the Center’s supporter list, including development, maintenance and analysis of data reports, coordinating with membership and systems.
Spearhead project to rebuild the main Center website.
Oversee planning, developing, coordinating, production and maintenance of strategic websites, including calls with staff and outside stakeholders.
Work closely with conservation and organizing staff to strategize, develop and then lead execution of digital campaigns aligning with conservation work.
Direct and oversee digital graphics strategy and implementation, including website design, branding, social media, rapid-response, digital ad videos, feature videos, call-to-actions, reports, infographics, educational content, and memes.
Supervise the existing Digital team members (deputy director, digital communications experts, and digital organizers) and manage recruiting and training to build out team to better support core team functions.

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:
A passion for wildlife, protecting wild places and saving life on Earth.
Deep and demonstrated experience with email platforms, web development, social media and mobile technologies.
Ability to structure and analyze complex data sets.
Experience supervising staff and teams.
Experience with list segmentation, testing, and tracking.
At least five years’ experience working on multi-platform digital campaigns that engage, mobilize and activate.
Exceptional written, visual and communication skills.
Strong strategic-planning skills linking on-the-ground activism with digital platforms.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with a team.
Excellent ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines in a busy environment.
Proven project-management experience with short- and long-term assignments, including creation and implementation of digital campaigns.
Associate’s or bachelor’s degree.
