Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for service and general information calls. Prioritizes and assigns call to appropriate department for response. Answers radio traffic and monitors available and assigned units via Computer Aided Dispatch Systems. Runs confidential computer programs.
May be required to work within the communications center in a solo capacity. May be assigned as an acting supervisor in their absence; or training officer, to provide guidance/supervision to co-workers in their initial training/probationary period.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
A person in this position works under the supervision of a Dispatch Supervisor and Division Captain. A Dispatcher may be required to work within the communications center in a solo capacity. A Dispatcher may be assigned as an acting supervisor, or training officer, to provide guidance/supervision to co-workers and Dispatchers in their initial training/probationary period. Also, Dispatchers may be assigned as an acting supervisor in the absence of the Dispatch Supervisor.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Answers incoming radio, telephone, 911 and computer generated calls of both an emergent and non-emergent nature; ascertains the nature of each situation and appropriately determines which personnel and apparatus to dispatch according to jurisdiction and in accordance with standard operating procedure.
Demonstrates an operational knowledge of the radio systems and their frequency allocations in use within the communications center. Understands the concept of communications interoperability when working with other agencies on specific incidents.
Maintains incident and status histories accurately in the Computer Aided Dispatch system and other records, documenting agency response and location of personnel and apparatus.
Operates various computer software programs in support of critical job functions such as; Open Fox CCIC/NCIC interface, GIS mapping, CODE RED Reverse 911 Community Notification, Eforce CAD, Microsoft Word & Excel, Lotus Notes, ReadyOps & FFRS paging, Equature Voice Retrieval, and others.
Works with databases containing confidential information such as criminal histories, driver histories, wanted persons, Homeland Security alerts, police records, etc. Maintains security and confidentiality of information.
Maintains current knowledge and understanding of all Communications Center policies and procedures to ensure uniform delivery of service to customers.
Displays a working knowledge of county geography including reading and interpreting maps. Displays knowledge of GPS coordinates.
Participates as a team member in promoting the overall welfare and esprit de corps of the communications center.
Responsible for minor routine maintenance and daily cleaning of equipment and facility within the common areas of the communications center.
Provides Emergency Medical Dispatch functions after receiving training and certification.
Enters arrest warrants, BOLO information, etc. into state and national databases. Assists with management of such databases through quality assurance program.

WORK SCHEDULE: Able to work holidays, weekends and rotating shifts; able to work shifts up to twelve hours in duration without degradation of work performance; able to report for shifts on-time without exception; able to have schedule changed as the needs of the organization dictate; able to work beyond twelve hours in duration during exigent circumstances.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in an office environment. Ten hour shifts often requiring mostly sitting/sedentary work. Lighting and temperature controlled via work station and in cooperation of co-worker. Breaks are sometimes delayed or forgone dependent on shift workload. Occasionally works in a solo capacity when needed.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

Able to sit for extended periods of time.
Able to perform, without additional assistance, all physical movements required for immediate emergency service dispatching including operating telephones, radios, paging devices, and multiple computer terminals.
Able to lift up to 20 pounds.
Able to hear adequately to utilize telephone and radio equipment and to converse with employees and/or public without negatively impacting service delivery.
Able to accept criticism and deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations
Able to maintain composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must pass background check
Conviction Record: Have no felony convictions
Must have a working telephone – can be either cell or home phone
Required legal authorization to work – United States citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States

SUPERVISORY: Maybe assigned as communications training officer or dispatch supervisor as needed.
