Job Description : Executive Director, Summit Independent Living (CIL)Position SummaryOur CIL, located at the confluence of five river valleys in beautiful Missoula, Montana, is at an exciting point in its evolution. We are seeking a visionary Executive Director (ED) to lead as we rebrand and increase our public visibility; raise funds for a state-of the-art accessible headquarters/community center; and vitalize our mission to meet 21st century challenges.Location: Missoula, MontanaBenefits: Medical health insurance, Long-Term Disability and Life Insurance paid by employer; vision and dental supplemental insurance at nominal costs paid by employee payroll deductions. Paid sick leave and vacation leave; 13 Paid holidays annually, 403b Retirement Plan, and Flexible Spending Account.Classification: Full-time (1.00 FTE), ExemptCompensation: $75,000 – $85,000 based upon qualifications and experienceAbout SummitSummit’s mission is to advance the independence and civil rights of people with disabilities. We have been leading the way in Independent Living (IL) in Montana since 1986, when efforts to deinstitutionalize disabled people seeking freedom in community began in earnest. We were active in supporting Justin Dart’s gathering of testimony to help pass the ADA and our advocacy efforts have continued to span local, state, and national levels with marked success. We are vocal in shaping the physical landscape for transportation and recreation in our service area and indriving legislation and policies that meet the most pressing needs of people with disabilities.Summit currently employs 26 staff members across four counties. In addition to our IL department, Summit runs a Self-Directed Personal Care department employing about 240 caregivers. The Executive Director directly supervises five staffers as well as guides and supports multiple Program Coordinators who are tasked with delivering Core IL Services (Information & Referral, Advocacy Services, Peer Advocacy, Skills Training, and Transition (Youth & Deinstitutionalization)). 58% of our staff are people with disabilities.Summit is well known for its innovative youth and adult programs and is home to BASE, our offsite all-ages, all-abilities community engagement center run by disabled advocates who are also working comedians. BASE offers classes in improv comedy, the arts, wellness, and life skills to help prepare local youth to lead an empowered life within the community.About the PositionPersonal QualitiesSummit is seeking to hire an Executive Director who is a vision-driven optimist and a natural people-person capable of serving as the focal point for a strong organizational culture of cooperation, mutual appreciation, and skilled communication. Summit’s Executive Director must be able to project powerfully into the community, representing our mission and vision to other nonprofits, donors, government officials, the media, and citizens in a way that builds understanding of disability culture and advocacy goals and motivates others to act. They must be in tune with the unique challenges that climate change and demographic shifts pose to people with disabilities in coming decades, especially in the Mountain West, while leading us into the future with determination, optimism, and ingenuity. An understanding of the unique barriers posed to disabled persons residing in rural areas is key.Core ResponsibilitiesThe Executive Director’s job covers the following main areas:Programming & Strategic PlanningFinance & OperationsFundraising & OutreachAdvocacyHR and Personnel DevelopmentThe Executive Director ensures that Summit is not only stable in all of these areas but also thriving and evolving in response to our organizational vision and a rapidly changing world. She/he/they will unify us from within and empower us to drive change in the wider world. Direct experience with disability and firm grounding in the history, values, and aspirations of civil rights and the Independent Living Movement is essential for the job.Programming & Strategic PlanningGuide and collaborate with the Board of Directors and senior staff to design short- and long-term plans that respond directly to the pressing needs of people with disabilities in our service area.Assume personal accountability for reaching organizational goals set in strategic plans and overall success of programming and provision of core services.Work with senior staff to guide and oversee programming in Missoula and three satellite offices (In Hamilton, Ronan, and Kalispell).Act in coalition/collaboration with other segments of the community to ensure civil and human rights for all community members.Able to travel and participate in local-, state-, and national-level conferences and gatherings in order to stay abreast of IL developments and network effectively.Finance & OperationsLead the development and continuing oversight of the annual budget and financial audit.Serve as the Contract Officer for Summit, overseeing all funding and project proposals.Approve expenditures and allocation and management of resources.Oversee preparation of reports and financial statements to fulfill external reporting requirements.Ensure legal and regulatory compliance in consultation with our attorneys; follow all internal policies and bylaws.Strategize creatively to diversify and solidify Summit’s financial position over the long term, e.g., through fee-for-service, development, endowment, or public sector funding.Support the Board of Directors in its governance role and assist with Board training, recruitment, and development. Apprise the Board of relevant internal developments and disseminate key documentation and Director’s Reports to the board in advance of meetings.Oversee and manage operations staff and troubleshoot creatively.Fundraising & OutreachWork with the Development & Outreach Director and Grant Writer to actualize our fundraising potential. Help bring our $4m capital campaign to completion within ~3-4 years through public speaking, media communications, internal committees, one-on-one meetings with donors, and passionate communication of our mission and its importance in the community.Maintain a visible personal presence at community events and in leadership circles.Work with the Development & Outreach Director to raise our profile and public awareness in our service area (especially in rural and Native areas) and develop a relationship with local media and various community organizations and businesses.Advocacy/Community ChangeCollaborate with other CILs in Montana through the MTCIL organization to set and pursue legislative and policy goals based on the most urgent needs of Montana’s people with disabilities.Work with the Summit Advocacy Coordinator to strategize for successful lobbying, media communications, and community mobilization.Speak in public and in media channels to spur action locally, in Montana, and on the national level when necessary.Ensure Summit is involved in community education around supports, services, and barrier reduction that supports integrated, affordable, and sustainable community living for people with disabilities.HR and Personnel DevelopmentInspire respect and good will among staff. Hold oneself and others accountable. Inspire trust and maintain open-mindedness.Growth-mindset, always seeking to improve own competencies and foster growth and development in staff.Effective mediator with powerful conflict resolution skills. Well networked in IL and advocacy circles nationwide.
