Would you like to gain experience working with a national heritage association? Do you have interest in a career working in Canadian History? The Juno Beach Centre Association (JBCA) is looking for an Exhibitions Assistant for 2022-2023!

Hourly wage: $20 (30 hours per week over 40 weeks)
Application deadline: March 31st 2022
Beginning of contract: May 2nd 2022
End of contact: February 10th 2023
Access to a personal computer necessary
The successful candidate will be working from home and interacting with team members over Zoom, Slack, and other communication channels.

ELIGIBILITY

This position is offered through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage Organizations intern employment program. Eligibility is restricted to those who:

are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
are legally entitled to work in Canada;
are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment;
are unemployed or underemployed;
are a college or university graduate;
are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program; and
are registered in the YCW online candidate inventory (https://young-canada-works.canada.ca/Account/Login)

The ORGANIZATION

The Juno Beach Centre Association (JBCA) is the Canadian-based charity that owns and operates the Juno Beach Centre (JBC), Canada’s Second World War museum and cultural centre in Normandy, France. The JBC is located on the beaches of the Normandy Landings in France, where Allied Forces began the liberation of Europe from Nazi rule on June 6th, 1944. The core purpose of the Association includes:

Provide a tangible and fitting memorial to Canada’s participation in the Second World War and recognize the emergence of Canada on the world scene.
Remembering and commemorating the sacrifices made by all Canadians who were part of the Allied victory in all theatres of war and at home during the Second World War.
Educating adults and children of today and future generations about the role of Canada and Canadians in preserving the freedoms we are privileged to enjoy today.

The JBCA supports the JBC in new exhibition development. In 2024, the museum will re-launch Room G: “Faces of Canada Today” as the crown jewel of our concurrent Sustainable Development and Expansion initiative. It was initially designed in the early 2000s and no longer properly reflects contemporary Canada two decades later.

THE POSITION

Reporting to the Director of Exhibitions and Executive Director, the Exhibitions Assistant will play a lead role in developing the JBC’s renewal of permanent gallery space Faces of Canada Today (Room G). This room explores the many facets of contemporary Canadian society since the end of the Second World War. Intended primarily for European audiences, it will present the diversification of Canada, immigration waves, the legacies of Second World War veterans as well as modern Canadian veterans and Canada’s culture of commemoration over the past 8 decades.

Duties of the Exhibitions Assistant are anchored in the themes listed above and include but are not limited to:

General research
Iconography and artefacts research
First-hand accounts and personal testimonies research
Video interview transcription
Liaising with partners, scenographers, graphic designers
Digital iconography acquisitions and collections management
Liaising with lending museums and archives
Liaising with private lenders
Overseeing the shipping of artefacts
Progress reporting
Coordination with other team members
Other administrative duties as assigned

The successful candidate will be creative, driven, and self-motivated. Other expectations include:

Holds a completed degree, diploma, or graduate certificate in a history, public history, curatorship, museum studies program or other relevant education and experience
A high degree of digital literacy
Preference will be given to individuals who show a high level of bilingualism (French and English)
Demonstrated experience with a variety of digital platforms and technologies
Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of Canadian history and Canadian military history is considered an asset
Strong writing and communications skills, basic understanding of social media networks
Ability to take initiative and work independently to surpass expectations
Excellent organizational, time management and research skills
Team player and demonstrated strong interpersonal and communications skills
Ability to think creatively and strategically in order to develop new approaches to achieve desired results
Experience working within museums developing exhibitions will be considered an asset
Experience with digital history projects will be considered an asset
Flexible and easily adapt to change
Proficient in Microsoft Office and willing to learn and adapt to new systems
