Compensation:

Pay range: Starting salary $55,000-$56,650
Benefits: For employees contracted for 30 hours per week or more, Thomas MacLaren School pays for 100% of the employee’s base insurance premiums (Health, Dental, Vision, Long-term and Short-term disability, Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance, and Life insurance) for the base level coverages. No benefits are provided to employees contracted for less than 30 hours per week.

General Purpose: The Assistant Head of School supports the Head of School of Thomas MacLaren School in the faithful implementation of the design and mission of the school. The Assistant Head of School is an integral part of the leadership team, working in the daily operations of the school to move the school closer to its mission and vision of bringing a classical, liberal arts education to the students of Colorado Springs. The K-2 Assistant Head has particular oversight of the academic, cultural, and student life in these youngest grades in the Lower School.

Specific duties include:

Assists Head of School in hiring process
Assists Head of School in teacher training, coaching, and supervision
Acts as direct supervisor for K-2 classroom faculty

Oversees scheduling of faculty assignments under direction of Head of School
Understands MacLaren’s pedagogy and curriculum and is able to coach faculty in these areas
Oversees teaching assistants who support K-2 students

Assists Head of School in building a thriving student culture of kindness, friendliness, and peace
Addresses student discipline matters with parents, staff, and any others as necessary regarding student discipline, under Head of School’s direction
Responds to parental concerns, under Head of School’s direction

Other duties include:

Participates in the community of learners, which includes teaching at least one course per year
Responsible, under Head of School’s direction, for school accreditation documentation as mandated by the Colorado Department of Education and the school’s authorizer
Is a member of the Academic Committee and is knowledgeable of students at academic risk
Confers with parents, faculty, staff members, and any others as necessary regarding student progress
Oversees Academic Compliance including assessments and data to target students, faculty or areas of curriculum in need of improvement
Assists Head of School in planning events for parent-school dialogue and exchange
Works with the school’s administrative and financial officers in the preparation of the annual school budget
Oversees, under Head of School’s direction, compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations
Assists Head of School in maintaining accurate and up to date policy records
Sits on committees as assigned by the Head of School
Attends all Board meetings
Assists with work of the Development Committee

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree
, from an accredited university. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: At least two years as a teacher or administrator in an elementary or secondary school. Experience in a Great Books program or in a program akin to the MacLaren program may be given consideration in lieu of other administrative experience.

Or other background demonstrating application of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Ability to make practical, common sense judgments
Evidence of a love-of-learning and desire to participate in the community of learners
