OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE
:

To perform lead worker duties in the areas of patrol, code enforcement, visitor education and outreach, and interpretive tasks on Parks and Recreation properties; to prepare and deliver environmental education programs; and to perform related duties as required.

The starting pay for this position is
$33.15 – $
40.51, commensurate with experience.

ANGER / NATURALIST MISSION

The mission of the Parks and Recreation Ranger/Naturalist is to provide for natural and cultural resource protection, public safety, environmental education and public land stewardship through a professional and collaborative staff serving the needs of the community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:

Acts as lead worker for Ranger/Naturalist work group, including:

Assist supervisor with day-to-day direction, prioritization, and problem solving for the efficient and effective delivery of Ranger/Naturalist services.

Models a collaborative and cooperative approach to service delivery; conducts activities to support a team approach among Ranger/Naturalists, including supporting and assisting with conflict resolution as needed.

Provides input to supervisor on the evaluation, selection, and performance management of Ranger/Naturalists; provides regular, ongoing feedback to Ranger/Naturalists on job performance and team functioning.

Serves as Field Training Officer, ensuring Ranger/Naturalist staff are trained and skilled in all aspects of job performance; makes recommendations for more extensive training for individuals or group as needed; maintains records on training and certification activities.

Assists with daily management of Ranger/Naturalist workgroup tasks in the absence of the supervisor.

Performs patrol, code enforcement, visitor education and outreach, resource protection, and interpretive tasks on Parks and Recreation properties, including:

Monitors properties and responds as needed to illegal activity, unsafe conditions, visitor aid, and range management needs; issues tickets or warnings for violations of Parks regulations, performs minor repairs or summons help to remedy unsafe field conditions or range management problems that need immediate attention.

Interacts with the public while on duty to provide information on natural history, management policies, and visitor opportunities.

Assists with and may coordinate emergency response, including administration of first aid, law enforcement activities, search and rescue, and wildlife incidents.

Assists with and performs wildland fire suppression and fire management tasks, including assessment, suppression, incident command, and coordination with other agencies.

Performs on-call standby duties, conducts evening and night patrols as needed.

Maintains all required qualifications including Colorado POST, First Responder and NWCG Wildland Firefighter Type II or higher. Performs all duties and tasks required of the Ranger Naturalist position.

Prepares and delivers environmental education and interpretive programs to support the public education and outreach activities of the Department.

Performs natural resource preservation and protection tasks on Parks and Recreation properties.

Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.

REQUIRE
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Outdoor Recreation Management or related field and a minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in ranger services, natural resource management, or related field. The ability to train and motivate staff and evaluate employee performance, providing constructive feedback. A demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise projects and field work to meet departmental priorities. Sufficient law enforcement related experience to direct enforcement activities on OSMP properties. A successful candidate lacking a Colorado POST peace officer certification will be required to complete Colorado POST law enforcement academy within one year of date of hire. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership during critical incidents. Physical ability to work in an outdoor environment requiring standing, walking, bending and kneeling. Ability to use all safety equipment. Ability and willingness to work evenings or weekends or to respond to emergency calls as needed. Ability to qualify for a Wild Land Fire Fighter Red Card within one year of hire. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, governmental agencies, and the public. Ability to prepare effective written reports and public presentations and to work and communicate effectively with diverse groups of people, including the ability to deal courteously with the public and land users. Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to use computer software for word processing and data management. Have and maintain a valid driver’s license, acceptable motor vehicle record, and acceptable criminal background check as described below.

Demonstrated personal and professional honesty, integrity, and good judgment as shown in applicant’s criminal history, background, and motor vehicle record. In addition to background, criminal and driving record information, polygraph, drug screening, a medical examination and psychological testing will be used after a conditional job offer is made to further evaluate the stated criteria and to provide supplementary information for the items listed below. The following will disqualify any applicant from consideration for employment before or after the conditional employment offer is made:

Any felony conviction.

Any commission of a felony in the previous 60 months (five years), including felonious drug use or possession.

Any non-traffic related misdemeanor within the previous 36 months (three years).

The use, sale, possession, or transfer of any controlled substance in the previous three years. (There may be some discretion if the facts show very limited experimentation with marijuana. There will be zero tolerance for regular marijuana use or use of any other controlled substance in previous 36 months.)

Eight points or three moving violation convictions, or a suspended, restricted, or revoked license in the previous 24 months (two years).

Any false or untrue statements, or material omissions in the application and related paperwork or during the selection process.

Any other information, which clearly demonstrates a lack of personal and professional honesty, integrity, and good judgment as appropriate for employment in a public safety position.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
:

Previous completion of State certified law enforcement academy, and current certification. Previous law enforcement experience in a natural resource setting. First responder or higher medical certification and Red Card firefighter certification and experience in wild land firefighting, Firefighter Type I/ ICT5 certification. Previous experience training, developing and leading diverse teams.
