Position Overview
The individual operates the ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF) in accordance with all CMC policies and standard operating procedures, with the understanding that safety is our number one priority. The individual will also be responsible for performing the chemical analysis of steel samples from the furnace, LMF, and the caster. It will be the responsibility of the individual to ensure that all LMF equipment is functional and will collaborate with supervisors and maintenance for problem analysis and resolution. The individual will be responsible for ensuring that all heats are manufactured to CMC chemical specification and ship the heats to the caster in a timely manner. The individual will act as a subject matter expert to operations and shift personnel on all LMF related issues and work to improve efficiency and utilization.
Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesA sound understanding of the liquid process route and the impact of upset conditions not only on the LMF station but the liquid process as a whole.A sound understanding of the secondary steelmaking process to ensure the job can be performed correctly. Topics would include the effect of high carbon versus low carbon heats, Calculation of liquids temperature and casting time, understanding de-oxidation, the effect of alloying elements and slag conditioning.Understand the computer programs such as Level 2 and HMI (Human Machine Interface) to help perform job effectivelyDetermine chemical analysis by testing steel samples using a spectrometerWork with the liquid pulpit operator to maximize efficiency of the LMF (alloy/carbon recoveries)Take samples and temperatures as needed to ensure products are chemically and physically within specification.Take slag samples, perform slag analysis and treat synthetic slag as needed.Communicate slag analysis results to liquid process technician via radio and computerVisually monitor computer screens to ensure process is running safely and correctlyCommunicate co-ordination of ladle movements with hot metal crane operator when neededManually control LMF, by operating mechanical components such as ladle car, electrodes arms, stir rod etc.Troubleshoot work related issues by using job knowledge, experience, and by communicating with others to solve the problemWork with the team to ensure all products are manufactured in accordance with CMC specifications safely and in a timely mannerChange and add to electrodes as neededPerform housekeeping on a regular basisPerform routine calibration and standardization of the spectrometerAssist with maintenance of LMF during downtimeResponsible for controlling and replenishing the inventory of consumables needed at the LMF operations floorUnderstand start up, shutdown, and emergency procedures for the LMF and Chemical Lab.Suggest improvements in work methods and procedures by verbally communicating ideas with supervisor or othersAbility to work on elevated surfaceAbility to work in extreme heat
This position will require cross-training between the Furnace Operator, Ladle Furnace Operator and Caster Technician and understanding of the duties in each position.
H.S. or GED Required.
