Job Description
Shopify is a leading commerce-enablement platform with ambitions to grow our brand globally, requiring multilingual content initiatives that can support this effort at scale. As a Terminologist, you will be a critical member of a team dedicated to content localization and multilingual copywriting with a particular focus on Growth. You will work closely with interdepartmental stakeholders, R&D teams, and content creators on projects spanning multiple products, channels, and content verticals.
International content and localization efforts at Shopify are centered around linguistic excellence, teamwork, and cutting-edge technology. Our work is not just about translation and localization; it is about providing our users with an experience that feels locally and topically relevant and fuels international growth with an ever-expanding base of empowered partners and merchants.
As a Terminologist, you will partner with content designers, language specialists, content managers, SEO managers, and other terminology stakeholders across the company to define a company-wide terminology and keyword management strategy. You will be responsible for ensuring that the correct terms are used consistently across Shopify. This involves collecting terms of interest in the company, documenting these terms with the appropriate information (metadata) such as definitions, subject field, product associations, use guidelines, and part of speech. You will work with stakeholders to decide on preferences which will guide writers and translators to use language consistently. You will communicate this information as reference materials for writers and translators and as linguistic resources for enterprise systems including, but not limited to, content management and authoring tools, translation tools, product taxonomies, and search engine optimization.
Success in this role is based on your ability to champion terminology best practices, define an effective terminology management process, and partner with localization technical programs to deliver optimal workflow solutions for efficient content development processes. You are a highly motivated individual with solid technical aptitude who works autonomously in a fast-paced environment and holds a high bar for exceeding expectations. You have a demonstrated ability to manage priorities and projects with the right mix of organizational and communication skills and the ability to nurture relationships with a broad set of internal stakeholders and partners. You should have a passion for innovation, localization technology, terminology, and content management solutions, be adaptable and resilient to change, eager to grapple with challenging and sometimes seemingly insurmountable technical problems.
What You Will Be Working On:
Monitor documentation, software UI, website pages, and other relevant materials to identify changes, developments, linguistic inconsistencies and variations in different areas of terminology used at Shopify.
Establish terminology standards and help define a terminology management strategy:
Establish and contribute terms to a terminology database,
Develop new terminology for use where none exists,
Carry out linguistic research and prepare terminological glossaries, technical vocabularies, and related language tools.
Engage and build relationships with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to ensure terminology requirements are implemented, work in close collaboration with other teams/departments to coordinate terminology work and projects to avoid duplication and eliminate gaps.
Own project kickoffs and vertical meetings with cross-functional groups for planning, answer terminology queries from other departments and external translation vendors.
Partner with language specialists, content managers, and SEO managers, to promote the use of correct, effective and uniform terminology across all Shopify content properties.
Propose solutions to terminology issues raised by team members and conduct research and consultations to this end.
Keep abreast of developments in machine-assisted translation and terminology and contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the data in translation memory.
Qualifications
Demonstrated experience working in the field of terminology management, language technology, or translation, including practical experience of localization-oriented terminology work with terminology management.
Advanced knowledge of terminology theory and practice.
Deep understanding of terminology, localization and content management tools, industry standards, systems, and integrations, including cutting-edge technology developments and trends in this space.
Familiarity with SEO concepts and understanding of SEO-driven content production.
Ability to collate and/or create terminology resources.
Experience with relevant software, such as terminology and translation management systems, computer-assisted translation tools, term extraction tools, and other related software.
Proficiency in the use, creation, and management of terminology databases.
Readily able to communicate technical information to non-experts.
Able to drive and manage multiple projects under constrained timelines and shifting priorities.
Able to work in a high-growth ambiguous environment with little guidance.
Creative, solution-oriented, hardworking, and analytical mindset.
Bias to action, proactive and innovative by nature; not dogmatic. There are many ways to achieve a result and you’re not married to any one way.
Strong attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
Strong analytical skills, a data-driven approach to problem-solving, and an experimental growth mindset.
Comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Comfortable with a hyper-active Slack environment. You don’t get distracted easily, even in a noisy (metaphorically speaking) environment.
Must be able to travel globally on occasion.
Bonus Experience:
Entrepreneurial mind; if you’ve started a business of your own before that would be great!
Experience working effectively within a multilingual, globally distributed team.
Additional Information
The posting will expire on the 9th of February.
