Job Description : Are you interested in a career in government, the United Nations, NGOs, program or campaign coordination, or public relations? If so, this full-time National Coordinator (NC) position at Science for Peace (www.ScienceForPeace.org) is right up your alley.Science for Peace (SfP) is a non-governmental charitable organization with its office at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus. SfP consists of academics, the wider public and students, and has been providing peace education services to the university and the surrounding community for over 40 years. Its members were founders of the peace and conflict studies program at the University of Toronto.SfP organizes various research and educational activities, as well as campaigns, that direct the government towards non-violent policy development and action. Members often contribute by participating in one of three groups: Nuclear Weapons Working Group, Militarism and Climate Change Working Group, and the Working Group on NATO. SfP campaigns for addressing the climate crisis, the negative impact of militarism, and for Canada to withdraw its membership from NATO and instead support Common Security.The NC is the heart of our organization and first point of contact. With the support and direction of the organization’s executive, the NC will keep all of SfP’s activities in motion, and grow them. While you may not have every desired specialty, you will receive training in certain areas and will be provided resources for self-training (i.e., social media and graphic design) to help you run and expand SfP’s activities. These activities include:Social Media and Graphic DesignAttract the interest and online participation of our community by running our Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube pages, as well as our website, newsletter and webcastsCreate, edit and produce multimedia, with a focus on effective event posters and infographics using the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, and organization of webcastsDevise a consistent and distinctive SfP styleCommunity and MembershipInvite scholars and policy thinkers to contribute articles on vital issues concerning human security that are especially relevant to our working groupsEngage current and new members towards constructive action through the development and implementation of on-boarding and engagement processesGrow the membership with the support of the executive and be superbly responsiveMeetings and LeadershipOrganize, moderate and run the meetings of the executive, board, interns and working groupsFeel comfortable in your own shoes, and let your energy, laughter and smile shine and motivate members – be a leaderFinanceMaintain financial records, make payments, produce forecasts, devise milestones and advise the executive accordinglyOrganize fundraisers, score grants and ensure the organization is on track for financial and sustainable growthPartnershipsBuild and grow existing partnerships with the United Nations, government, NGOs, and academic programsAct as a liaison between working group experts at Science for Peace and active educators in secondary and post-secondary institutions to integrate our educational resources into curriculumEvents and CampaignsDevelop and implement a project plan for eventsInvite and introduce scholars in our monthly “Vital Discussions on Human Security” seminar at the universityDirect our campaigns, petitions and press releases pertaining to militarism, climate change, and NATOInternshipsFurther develop and run a student internship program and score partnershipsDevelop an on-boarding and off-boarding process (i.e., certificates)With the support of Working Groups, oversee the development of short coursesEnsure students are engaged and contributing to our working groupsBe the change you want to seeRather than just running the organization, engage in it to get a deeper intellectual feel for the organization and contribute to to working group activitiesBe flexible and willing to occasionally work on weekendsOther itemsAttention to detail is keyDocument best practices for all areas of the positionKeep the executive in the loop – this is your organization to run and the more you’re able to report on tasks and accomplishments at the end of each day, the more the executive can focus its energies on high-level partnerships and visionThis position is intended to be in-person at our SfP office at the university (certain activities may be considered for remote work)Past Work ExperienceYour past experience includes 2-years of work experience that is relevant to the tasks mentioned above, and we can consider exceptional recent alumni that excelled in running all aspects of student clubs relevant to SfP.
