Natural Resource Stewards
Position Details:
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.
SIP in partnership with the National Park Service are seeking interns who will support Rocky Mountain National Park’s Resource Stewardship Division as Natural Resource Stewards (Stewards). Stewards will primarily be working with the Restoration Ecology Program helping cultivate and plant native plant species, manage invasive species, and document and map rare and non-native species. Natural Resource Stewards will also gain experience in a wide range of resource management activities such as seed collection, seed cleaning, vegetation monitoring, irrigation, erosion control, digital data collection, various tool use, and may get to participate in several wildlife projects as well. Stewards will interact regularly with park staff for ample training and learning opportunities.
Position Responsibilities will include:
Restoration of Alpine Tundra Communities
Load and transport plant material and supplies to project site
Plant greenhouse and nursery stock into restoration site using appropriate techniques
Set up irrigation with gas powered pumps, hose, and water tanks
Keep records of material planted and work completed
Restoration of Utility Line Disturbances around Park Headquarters
Weigh and mix seed for project
Treat invasive plants growing in project areas
Seed and mulch site
Install erosion control materials where necessary
Record and map areas restored using GPS technology
Removal of Exotic Plants in High Priority and High Visitor Use Areas
Use hand tools to manually remove invasive plants
Use backpack sprayers and UTV to control invasive plants with herbicides
Mix, store, and load herbicides
Record data on treatment areas using GPS
Map new populations of exotic invasive plants
Minimum Requirements:
No minimum education requirements
Ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records Check (must be at least 21 year old or have had a license for 3 years)
Ability to work outdoors at elevations above 8,000 feet for 8-10 hour days.
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in biological sciences, natural resources, or a related field
Experience in outdoor field work
