The position involves patrol of Bear Creek Lake Park, William Frederick Hayden Green Mountain Park, Stone House Park and Greenbelt Park as well as Main, Smith, and East lake parks. Duties include law enforcement, emergency response, ANS inspections, maintenance, public relations and education. This job requires working nights, weekends and holidays. Starting pay $19.00 per hour depending on qualifications. The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.

Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities

Emergency response:

Respond to accidents/ injuries interacting with West Metro Fire
Professional Rescuer BLS/CPR and First Aid certification required (may be provided) First Responder or higher certification is preferred
Wildfire response
Law enforcement:

Patrol all Regional parks and open spaces and trails using park trucks, boats, bicycles, UTV’s and foot.
Enforcing rules and regulations through written warnings, writing citations or giving verbal warnings
Patrols include a campground, public beach, 6,000 acres of park land, 60 miles of trails.
Aquatic Nuisance Species / Watercraft Inspector and Decontamination:
State certified Boat inspector and decontamination certification required (may be provided)

Essential Qualifications

Previous experience as a park ranger or a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources are preferred
Twenty-one (21) years of age or older
Physical ability to perform water and ice rescue if necessary (including swimming if needed); provide 1st aid; complete collapsible baton and OC certification; and perform maintenance duties. Applicants with Red Cards may be required to pass a pack test
Valid Colorado Driver’s License and good motor vehicle record required
Criminal background check required

KSA’s and Physical/Mental Reqs

Public relations and educating public
Completing required reports and documentation
Money handling
Dealing with difficult people
Maintenance including emptying trash, litter pickup, clean and stock restrooms
Performs other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Lifting and Carrying:
Must be able to lift, carry and/or maneuver printed materials, rocks and hand tools that weigh up to 10 pounds on a frequent basis.
Must occasionally lift the following that may weigh between 10 and 50 pounds: printed materials, rocks, tools, post pounders, signs, post removers, trash bags, bike, post-hole diggers, logs, bird seed, and animal carcasses.
Must occasionally lift the following that may weigh between 51 and 75 pounds: canoes, animal carcasses, logs and trash bags.
Will occasionally lift with assistance (two-person lift), the following that may weigh 75 pounds and up: picnic tables, animal carcasses, logs, buoys, trash bags, body weight for water rescues.

Pushing and Pulling:
Must occasionally push and pull posts fences and buoys. Must trailer boats primarily using hand cranks and truck.
Must be able to use basic rescue equipment including tossing a throw bag or ring, and pulling body weight.
Must be able to trailer a boat; load and unload a 15-foot boat into water; operate boat in all types of weather conditions.

Body Positions:
Work requires some sitting in both truck and in the office.
Work requires frequent standing and walking.
Work requires frequent moving about the parks for up to 10 hours per day.
Work requires frequent:
pinching (when filing, pulling tags and making change);
gripping (when driving, pulling signs and working with tools);
reaching for tools, ladders, materials, etc., and frequent
climbing in and out of vehicle up to 60 times per day and some
climbing on ladders.
Work requires occasional
bending,
kneeling,
balancing (in boat typically one time per week.)
Work requires occasional
crawling as well as occasional
maneuvering and/or balancing on ladders.
Requires occasional pushing to set posts and fences and trailering boats primarily using hand crank and truck. Occasional pulling of buoys in spring and fall.
Mountain biking and hiking through the parks.
Work may include running or swimming in emergency situations.
Manipulates tools, printed materials, cash and computer.
Administrative work is performed in an office environment, frequently moving about, standing, sitting and bending.
Patrol duties are performed on foot, on bike, in a vehicle, or boat.
Some driving is done on highway roads, residential roads, off-road, and on the water.

Hearing:
Must be able to respond to telephone and in-person requests and to communicate via two-way radio.

Vision:
Uses vision to read written job related information and to patrol grounds.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mathematics:
Must have basic mathematic knowledge for completing revenue duties.

Remembering:
Must know and follow proper lifting procedures.
Remember rules and regulations, city ordinances, etc., or have ability to locate resources.

Language Ability:
Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with visitors and city staff. Must give programs and will interact occasionally with upset citizens.

Reasoning:
Must be able to take direction and follow instruction from supervisor.
Must be able to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Hours of work will vary but will include weekends, holidays and nights.
Work is performed frequently in outdoor environment in all temperatures and weather conditions.
Uses computer occasionally.
