Job Description : Job Overview: This Peer Support Specialist position is located at the Montana State Hospital in Warm Springs and provides peer to peer support to patients at the hospital who have been diagnosed with a mental illness. A Peer Supporter, by definition, is a person who has been diagnosed with a mental illness and is grounded in recovery. Peer Support Specialists focus on promoting and encouraging wellness, independence, and recovery. This position facilitates their own peer groups or works as part of a team providing support services on unit as well as campus based.

Essential Duties or Responsibilities:
Support in Recovery 70%
Share their personal recovery story and lessons learned as a person in recovery to provide meaning and hope to the patient.
Assist patients in creating a Wellness or Recovery Plan (WRAP).
Facilitate peer groups and Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) ordered individual peer to peer support sessions.
Provide basic education on self-help strategies, wellness, and recovery concepts.
Role model recovery and wellness.
Support treatment and rehabilitation services prescribed by the LIP and treatment team.
Communicate daily effects of peer support verbally to LIP and treatment team as well as through documentation in the patient medical record.
Participate in escorting clients to special events as assigned such as the NAMI Conference and NAMI Walk.
Attend assigned morning reports on units assigned.

Education/ Advocacy 20%
Support patient in working as an integral member of their treatment team.
Assist patient in developing self-advocacy skills.
Welcome new admissions to the hospital and orient to Peer Support services.
Provide orientation, training, and education to staff members on the peer perspective.
Serve on the Grievance Committee and assist with grievance resolution efforts.
Represent the patient’s perspective in management meetings and other activities.
Comply with Department, Division and Hospital policy and direction as well as applicable state statutes.

Professional Development 10%
Participate in professional development and trainings to stay current with standards for peer support practice.
Maintain current certification as a WRAP facilitator.
Network with community and state Peer Support networks and colleagues.

Physical and Environmental Demands: This position requires incumbent to ambulate between work areas throughout the day. Staff member will be able to lift up to 10 pounds. Position will be located primarily indoors but will transition throughout the day between buildings. Position may be required to travel as a patient escort on specific community integration trips and events approximately 5% of the time.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge and experience receiving mental health services in the public sector.
Knowledge and experience applying principles of Peer Support.
Competent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to actively listen and provide social support.
Ability to facilitate peer groups and individual peer sessions.
Ability to uphold professional boundaries.
Ability to receive constructive feedback and implement suggested work performance.
Ability to comply with policies, procedures, and state statutes.
Ability to operate a personal computer to complete essential functions including word processing, internet, and email.

Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications (Education and Experience):
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Six months of experience using a computer to perform word processing, internet, and email duties.
Certified as a WRAP facilitator or obtain within one year of hire.
Certified Behavioral Health Peer Support Specialist preferred.
