Position: Personal Support Worker (Health Care Aide)

Reports to: Clinical Leader, Inpatient Program

Hours: 8 and 12 hour shifts within a 24-hour staffed hospital environment (a combination of days and overnights required)

Status: Part-time Casual, (OPSEU Bargaining Unit)

Compensation: $22.79 to $27.08 per hour (7 step salary progression grid)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Personal Support Worker, known as Health Care Aide (HCA) at Casey House, is a key member of the inter-professional inpatient team and accountable for direct client care. An HCA on the inpatient unit requires a unique blend of skills and abilities that meet the diverse needs of our clinically complex, vulnerable and often marginalized client population – including, but not limited to people living with, and at risk of, HIV, people who use drugs and people with mental health challenges. Our staff provide care using a trauma informed approach while working within a harm reduction framework. The HCA will be a skilled health care provider with the capacity to build therapeutic relationships with our clients while providing direct care and support.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs personal care to promote client comfort and safety.
Provides clients with assistance in their activities of daily living, including but not limited to: eating, dressing, transferring, hygiene, grooming, and bathing as per the clients’ plan of care.
Provides cognitive, social, and emotional support to the client.
Performs light housekeeping duties and helps with supply and inventory management
Works collaboratively within an inter-professional team.
Documents care in our electronic health record
Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Personal Support Worker certificate or diploma.
Experience working with marginalized populations preferred
HIV/AIDS and/or palliative care experience preferred.
Good understanding of the principles of client-centred care (e.g. autonomy, self- determination etc.).
Highly developed conflict resolution, critical thinking, decision-making and problem solving skills.
Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills & demonstrated capacity to work within a well-defined inter-professional team.
Proficiency in the use of computer technology, including Microsoft Office.
