Under the direction of the Athletics Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and supervising field maintenance operations and athletic complex development. Assists Athletic Supervisor with coordination, development, promotion, implementation and evaluation of programs, services, and resources to meet division goals and objectives. Must be able and willing to work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends. The schedule varies depending upon the season and the services offered. Must be flexible and able to work independently.

JOB SUMMARY

Field Maintenance Operations & Athletic Complex Development (70%):

Responsible for the design, resource allocation, and management of the Division’s Athletic Turf program.

Performs a wide range of maintenance projects on city athletic fields; including mowing, aeration, fertilizing, weed management. Applies herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely. Prepares and maintains natural grass and artificial turf sports fields and facilities for games and practices and community use.

Assists with facility snow removal during the winter months.

Coordinates schedules and supervises field/gym maintenance crews for all ball fields, parks, and facilities to ensure quality playing surfaces for guests.

Athletic Program Operations and Administration (30%):

Assists Athletic Supervisor with coordination, development, promotion, implementation and evaluation of programs, services, and resources to meet division goals and objectives.

Assists with league/tournament programs including: registrations and customer service, maintenance of scores and records; monitoring of field & weather conditions; etc.

Supports the preparation of marketing and promotional materials for publication in brochures and local news media to increase event and program participation.

Provides supervision at program sites including league and tournament play.

Conducts safety inspections as necessary to maintain a safe and user-friendly atmosphere for program participants.

Trains, assigns, and evaluates instructors, coaches, maintenance staff, and officials.

Conducts meetings with assigned personnel regarding safety and organizational procedures related to assigned programs.

Supervises facility operations as assigned.

Other projects or duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum High School Diploma or GED, Bachelor’s Degree with studies in Parks and Recreation, Administration, Physical Education, or related field preferred. Must be 21 years of age or older by date of hire. Minimum 1-3 months related experience and/or training in field maintenance or landscaping. Background in the sport of baseball and/or softball, and methods, materials, and equipment necessary for ball field maintenance activities. Knowledge and background in administering youth and adult athletic activities. Fundamental knowledge of athletic irrigation systems required. Experience with RecTrac and Quickscores or related software is a plus.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid driver’s license with good driving record.

Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables. Ability to carry out assigned tasks proficiently.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to operate a small truck, tractor, utility vehicle, and a variety of tools.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED

Computer, printer, copier, phone and related office equipment. Small truck, shovel, rake, tractor, utility vehicle, tamper, field drag, tape measure, bases, chalk, paint, hammer, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, blowers, and guide string.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
