Position open until filled.PURPOSE: To develop and implement a strategy to increase support for refugee and immigrant communities among policy makers in Oregon. This position will work collaboratively with refugee and immigrant community members, refugee leaders, refugee resettlement offices, communities of faith, immigrants’ rights groups, and other partners across Oregon to build their education and organizing capacities, increase refugee leadership, improve community outreach, and relate grassroots activities and positive media coverage to relevant local, state, and national policy makers.ACCOUNTABILITY: To the mission and goals of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) as determined by the Board of Directors, and as administered by the President and his/her delegates.REPORTS TO: Public Policy Director.DIRECT REPORTS: N/ALOCATION: Remote anywhere in Oregon, preferably near Salem or Portland.CLASSIFICATION: Part time (30-32 hours per week), non-exempt.BENEFITS: Salary starts at $24.64 per hour. All regular employees (does not include on-call or temporary) are eligible for vacation, holidays, sick leave, 401(k) retirement plan, employee assistance program and employee trainings. Employees in exempt positions or non-exempt positions that are 20 hours per week or more, also receive medical insurance, dental insurance, disability insurance and life insurance, per eligibility requirements.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES * Establish a base of refugee, asylee and immigrant leaders towards collective power building.Convene and mobilize refugee leaders, resettlement office staff, volunteers, supporters and partners to educate policy makers and the public about refugee resettlement and promote welcoming attitudes and policies.Identify and coordinate meetings and events with policy makers involved in discussions about refugee resettlement and policies impacting refugees.Connect with refugee resettlement organizations, faith-based organizations and immigrants’ rights organizations to pursue shared goals.Cultivate refugee and asylee leadership development and increase capacity of refugees and asylees to tell their stories in an effective and impactful way.Work with EMO and national partner communications staff to increase visibility and awareness of support for refugee resettlement through traditional and social media.Collect information on local events and share with public officials and partners.Travel throughout Oregon (including virtually) to meet and strategize with community members.Track all events and contacts to maintain relationships, evaluate effectiveness and inform future work.Other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSAbility to work within the mission, vision and ethics of EMO, and maintain an understanding of the services provided by the programs and projects of EMO. EMO requires all of staff to be vaccinated however medical and religious exemption requests will be considered for this position.KNOWLEDGE: A minimum of one-year experience in grassroots and community organizing, social justice work, immigrant and refugee rights, and/or campaigning.SKILLS: Fluency in one or more languages spoken by refugees in the United States (e.g., Somali, Nepali, Karen, Arabic, French); Computer literacy in new media, social media, word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, webinar technology, video editing, and Microsoft Office applications.EFFORT: Well-organized with excellent communication, writing and speaking skills; Ability to travel within Oregon, when permitted given the COVID-19 pandemic.RESPONSIBILITY: Coordinate with Church World Service, including joining meetings and calls as appropriate; Build relationships between policy makers and community members, including refugees, employers of refugees, faith communities, and other supporters; Create opportunities to educate policy makers and the public about the importance of refugee resettlement and work with partners to facilitate events and meetings that promote the welcome of refugees in Oregon.WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to work in a respectful manner with people of diverse ethnicity, socio-economic circumstances, religion, culture and sexual orientation; High tolerance for ambiguity and change; Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, as some evening, weekend and off-site work may be required.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONSEMO believes that diversity is critical to fostering a strong workplace and serving our clients well.
