Job Description : Job DescriptionDate: 03/10/22Job Title: Research Associate1. General Statement (Summarize the purpose of the position and the department.)This is a full-time position assisting in the management of agronomic field and laboratory research associated with the variety testing program at Northern Agricultural Research Center, near Havre, MT. The successful applicant will be an active participant in all facets of the variety testing program including, but not limited to planning, design and execution of field crop research.2. Duties and Responsibilities (List essential functions (primary duties and responsibilities) of the position as well as the duties that the employee exercises independent authority, judgment, initiative and discretion.)1. Individual in this position will be responsible for the implementation and maintenance of applied agronomic field research conducted at Northern Ag Research Center under the direction of the Agronomy Research Scientist.2. Duties include assistance in the preparation, planting and implementation of field and laboratory research projects; application of treatments to research plots; precise recording of field and laboratory data; collecting research samples using scientifically prescribed methods and oversite of temporary employees.List any secondary duties assigned to this position:1. The individual is expected to assist with all aspects of the research program as necessary, including care and maintenance of assigned fields not in the current year research cycle2. The individual will provide periodic support for other research projects, farm operations, livestock operations and foundation seed production as necessary3. The individual will help maintain field and laboratory scientific equipment and supplies4. The individual will supervise seasonal employees3. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills (“Required qualifications” refers to the minimum and “must have” education and experience standards for an applicant to be considered.)1. Bachelor’s Degree focusing on Crop Science, Ag Technologies, or related discipline2. Experience in collecting, recording and summarizing agronomic field and laboratory research data3. Experience operating research- and farm-scale equipment4. Experience safely loading and securing equipment for transport, and towing trailers on the highway and through town4. Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills(“Preferred qualifications” refers to standards that will improve an employee’s ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position and enhance their performance.)1. Master’s Degree focusing on Crop Science, Ag Technologies, or related discipline2. Experience with dryland crops common to Montana3. Experience with Trimble Auto-Steer, or similar automated steering system4. Experience operating research lab equipment including balances, NIR, seed cleaning machines and grinders5. Experience with Windows and MS Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)5. Required Abilities (Required Abilities refers to the intrinsic abilities that an employee must have to be successful in this role that are difficult to demonstrate or evaluate in application materials. Will have outstanding communication skills, both written and oral, as a leader and a coworker2. Will be detail oriented with excellent record keeping skills3. Will be self-directed4. Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license within 6 months of hire, and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points) as in-state travel is required2. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Montana Government Pesticide Applicator’s License including the Ag PlantPest endorsement within 6 months of date of hire3. Work in the evenings and/or weekends will be required as dictated by season, weather and deadlines7. Physical Demands (Please list any physical requirements of the position. Also include outside work conditions, exposure to chemicals, blood borne pathogens, dust or fumes, climbing ladders, etc.)1. Must be able to enter, exit and operate numerous types of research and farm equipment unassisted; requires working around loud machinery2. Must be able to lift 60 pounds; requires repetitive movements and standing for extensive periods of time3. Must be able to work around dust, pollen-bearing plants and pesticides4.
