Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department is seeking to hire a Resource Park Ranger, Community Engagement Specialist. This is a journey level classification. The Resource Park Ranger, Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for resource protection and management of Boulder County parks, open space lands, and trails and the coordination and delivery of community engagement efforts including longstanding educational programs and outreach to underrepresented communities. Professional duties also include planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of a variety of resource protection functions including volunteer management, law enforcement, public safety, and emergency response. This is a full-time, benefited position. This position will work Wednesday – Saturday (4-10 hour days) 7:00am – 5:00pm. Additional weekend days, holidays, and evenings are required. This position will work out of the Parks and Open Space Building located at 5201 St Vrain Road, Longmont, with the duty location to be assigned. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime). As of December 1, 2021, Boulder County requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or request an approved accommodation within ten days of accepting an offer of employment. A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after completion of a two-dose mRNA series or one dose of Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work. Hiring Salary Range: $62,916.00 – $76,758.00 Annually Classification Salary Range: $62,916.00 – $90,600.00 Annually Tentative Hiring Timeline:

Examples of Duties
Resource Protection:
Perform foot, bicycle and vehicle patrol in order to enforce open space rules and regulations; protect natural and cultural resources; and maintain public safety
Conduct patrols on regional and neighborhood trails
Respond to and assist with emergencies on open space lands
Provide visitor education, outreach and/or ticketing when appropriate
Complete minor park maintenance and assist other staff with projects as requested
Conduct backcountry and boundary patrols on mountain properties and agricultural lands
Perform additional job-related work as required
May be reassigned in Emergency situations
Community Engagement, Visitor Outreach, And Volunteer Management:
Coordinate, implement, and evaluate the Left Hand Outdoor Challenge program for teens. Create program curriculum including risk management plans and monthly agendas. Recruit, supervisor, and train program mentors
Work with staff to develop, plan, coordinate and lead active programs related to visitor services, recreation, safety, and resource management for adults, youth and families
Work with staff to develop, plan, coordinate, and implement outreach efforts for underrepresented communities
Develop and lead volunteer programs and projects related to resource protection goals and objectives. Coordinate, train and supervise volunteers
Assist in the development of educational materials including digital/social media to educate and inform park visitors. Monitor and evaluate effectiveness
Provide direction and training to hourly park rangers and temporary staff on the implementation of community and visitor engagement efforts including trail-based programs and community events. Provide feedback and evaluation
Serve as a community liaison and assist with public communications and media requests.
Perform additional job-related work as required

Required Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation, resource management, park management, environmental education, park ranger technology, or a related field of study AND 2 years experience in parks law enforcement, outdoor education, and/or recreation management. Additional related education may count towards required experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have successfully completed a P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training) program or equivalent, or become P.O.S.T. certified within one year of hire
Park Rangers are required to wear and maintain a uniform.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
National Association of Interpretation Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) certification or equivalent coursework
American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response certification or equivalent first aid certification
Wildland Fire Incident Qualification Card (Red Card) including completion of S-130/190 Basic Firefighting and Wildland Fire Behavior course work
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Experience in the development and implementation of family and/or youth outdoor recreation and education programs including programs for diverse or underrepresented communities
Professional time management skills, project planning skills and the ability to work independently
Experience managing, supervising and coordinating volunteer work projects and/or on-going volunteer programs
Ability to work effectively with the public, county employees and other agencies
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
