Position : Small Business Ombudsman
Job Description : We are looking for a Small Business Ombudsperson (SBO) to join our team in the Energy Bureau of the Air, Energy, and Mining Division. While this position is housed within the Energy Bureau, the position will act as a liaison for a variety of small businesses on issues that may include water, air, remediation, and other environmental permitting issues that extend outside the energy sphere. Additionally, the SBO works to help Montana’s small businesses reduce energy burden by providing education and technical/financial assistance on energy efficient and renewable energy technologies.
Small Business Ombudsperson responsibilities include: 1) Meeting with individuals, citizen groups, representatives of business and industry and/or communities to discuss and demonstrate methods for meeting environmental regulations or understanding their impacts on communities and the decision-making process; and directing clients to those sources within the agency and other agencies that can assist with technical questions and problems. 2) Developing and distributing information concerning compliance methods and technologies to encourage adherence of small businesses to environmental regulatory requirements. 3) Assisting small businesses in determining applicable requirements and receiving permits in an efficient manner. 4) Informing small businesses of their rights and obligations pertaining to environmental regulations and ensuring that they have sufficient time to evaluate compliance methods. 5) Representing the interests of small businesses in the development of legislation and regulations. 6) Reporting on the status of the Small Business Environmental Assistance Program to the Environmental Protection Agency on an annual basis. 7) Serving as secretary/agency lead to the Small Business Compliance Assistance Advisory Council. 8) Assisting and educating small businesses on energy and resource efficient practices and technologies. 9) Serving as state contact for the Radon Control Program to include federal reporting requirements.

The Small Business Ombudsman position includes a career ladder for professional development and pay progression.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in business management, physical or life science, engineering, or other related degree.
Experience in business practices, environmental pollution control, pollution prevention, and/or energy efficiency.
Current valid Driver’s License and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy.
Other combinations of education and experience may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
