Research Assistant at the Verspeeten Clinical Genomics Laboratory – VH
Research Assistant opportunity is available with Dr. Bekim Sadikovic, Program Head of Molecular Diagnostics within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London, Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Western University and, Scientific and Clinical Director of the Verspeeten Clinical Genome Centre.
We are seeking a motivated individual to join the expanding clinical research team consisting of a diverse group of postdoctoral fellows, genome analysts, molecular lab technologists and clinical bioinformaticists, focused on projects involving advanced molecular technologies in clinical genomics and related to ongoing studies in genomic and epigenomic changes in patients with a range of constitutional and somatic genomic conditions.
Main roles associated with this position involve:
Assists in the generation of genomic data by performing techniques in the experimental laboratory
Assists in the modification and maintenance of electronic data management systems
Coordinates necessary data flow both internally as well as externally with collaborators from other sites
May obtain medical data on research subjects
May participate in qualitative analysis of data
May assist in interpretation of results and preparation of material for presentation, publication or grants
May conduct literature searches
May assist in the preparation of submissions to the Research Ethics Board
May maintain regulatory documents
Rate of Pay: To commensurate with experience
Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week
Duration of Contract: April 2022 – March 2023 (possibility of extension)
Non-Union Different terms and conditions of employment may apply to externally funded positions.

Qualifications

Qualifications
BSc in genetics or molecular biology
1 year of experience in a molecular biology/genetics laboratory
Data management experience (including scientific, genetics/genomic, and/or medical data)
Experience working with human genetics data in research or clinical setting
Experience with Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneDrive, and Teams
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as a member of a team collaborating with a multi-disciplinary research team and clinical experts
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) required
Strong attention to detail, organizational and time management skills
The ability to prioritize multiple tasks to meet competing deadlines
Preferred experience/skills:
Recent work experience with clinical genetic technologies including:
Microarray processing (methylation analysis an asset)
DNA/RNA extraction from various sample types
PCR (Real Time and Conventional), MLPA
Nucleic Acid Sequencing
VNTR analysis
Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)
Robotic Sample Handling
In silico analysis of nucleic acids
Other technologies that are routine or new
Familiarity with genetic nomenclature and ACMG variant classification guidelines an asset
Immunization Requirements:
Successful candidates will be required to complete a health review which includes providing vaccination records or proof of immunity against Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (Chicken Pox). In addition candidates will need to provide documentation of Tuberculosis Skin testing and a completed COVID vaccine series (two vaccines).
