OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE:
Under general supervision, professionally represent and attend to visitors and inquiries (telephone and in person) to the City Manager’s Office; Deliver direct professional and courteous customer and staff support in the administration of division or department activities. Provide detailed administrative, financial, and technical support; and perform related duties as required in a team environment.

The starting pay for this position is $18.31 – $22.38/hour, commensurate with experience.

OVERVIEW OF ROLE:

The Wildlife Crew Member role provides support to the Wildlife Program by implementing existing natural resource inventory and monitoring projects. This position will support all chartered land uses and open space purposes. The role is primarily field based (70-90%), conducting specialized wildlife surveys, assisting with ongoing biological research, reporting findings to senior ecologists for analysis and integration into management decisions, and the execution of projects that enhance natural habitats and wildlife populations on OSMP properties. The Wildlife Crew Member will work both independently and as part of a team to complete field-based monitoring. Opportunities will arise to collaborate across various workgroups, including wetland and riparian ecology, forest ecology and agricultural management.

EXAMPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES:

This position will entail ~85% field work and 15% office work

Perform wildlife inventory and monitoring of songbirds (forest and grassland), raptors, mammals, and amphibians off trail in OSMP’s mountain parks where livestock and barbed wire fencing can be encountered.
Follow specific study plans and established protocols.
Collect and organize wildlife data using Access, Excel and GIS.
GPS field mapping and data entry.
Operates four-wheel drive vehicles on rough terrain.
Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all proper safety equipment. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

REQUIRED CANDIDATE COMPETENCIES:

Wildlife Monitoring Techniques: Knowledge of various types of wildlife inventory and monitoring equipment (e.g. binoculars, GPS units, or remote cameras) and the ability to learn the use of additional tools and equipment. The effective use and maintenance of inventory and monitoring equipment.
Careful attention to detail: Detailed and accurate data collection skills, ability to follow establish collection protocols, are imperative for this position. This data must be kept organized through the entire collection process, from field planning, to collection, and through data entry. This information is used to inform and drive management decisions.
Written and Oral Communication: Ability to follow written and oral direction involving task assignments and safety protocols. Effectively communicate ideas and concerns as they arise directly to supervisors, colleagues and/or organization staff.
Flexibility and Adaptability: Willingness to work on a wide array of wildlife monitoring projects Self-motivated to work individually, yet able to work closely in pairs or as part of a team. Responsive to feedback; coachable. Able to function effectively when directions or priorities change quickly.
Safety & Responsibility: Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all proper safety equipment. Reports all accidents and damage to city property. Understands department’s emergency, wildlife, lightning and fire procedures.
Customer Service: Represent the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks with integrity to the public at all times while on the OSMP trail system.

Preferred Qualifications
:

Knowledge of front range fauna and flora or a demonstrated ability to learn local species.
Experience using binoculars, spotting scopes, GPS units, remote cameras, water quality measuring equipment, bat detectors, radio telemetry equipment, and rangefinders to perform various types of wildlife monitoring.

Required Qualifications:

Coursework in Ecology, Biology or a Natural Resources related field or demonstrated experience in wildlife monitoring and related knowledge.
Ability to lift and carry equipment and to stand, walk, and kneel while performing tasks on rough terrain and in a variety of weather conditions. Able to lift 30 pounds daily.
Must have a valid drivers’ license and the ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
Scheduling flexibility to work early morning and evening hours.
Acceptable background information, including criminal history.
