Position : Tourism & Destination Marketing Director

Job Description : The Director of Tourism & Destination Marketing will be responsible for the management of daily operations of the City’s Tourism Department. The director will provide leadership to maximize Ouray’s potential for generating visitor spending and creating compelling travel experiences, all while developing sustainable tourism mechanisms that protect the city’s cultural heritage and the social and natural environment.

Works under the broad policy guidance and direction of the City Administrator.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Provides general supervision to Visitor Center Coordinator, Customer Service Associates and Volunteers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
General Administration: Serves as a member of city executive staff to assist in the development and implementation of city-wide policies, practices, procedures in relation to tourism leadership, promotion and management; makes recommendations related to project and operational priorities; assists in the development of strategies to maximize collaboration with local organizations and City committees; conducts staff meetings to facilitate long-range planning and identification for improvements to the visitor experience; researches, writes, establishes, and evaluates department strategies, policies and procedures to implement executive directives from the City Administrator; assists subordinate staff to accomplish defined missions and objectives.
Plans, organizes and directs the development and selection of department priorities; monitors effectiveness and efficiencies of operations for compliance with strategic plans and delegated projects; manages the resolution of issues, concerns and problems that are derived from daily operations and visitor relations.
Develops and recommends departmental operations budget; evaluates various needs including staff, equipment, materials, consultants; implements approved budget and monitors compliance with fiscal guidelines; prepares periodic reports to track financial condition of the department and the overall tourism activities of the City.
Creates and manages request for proposals and consultants for periodic assistance to meet the requirements and expectations of the department (i.e. media guides, brochures, maps, digital content creation, etc.).
Participates in the recruitment and selection of departmental staff; provides or monitors training; determines performance expectations and standards; assists employees to identify performance goals and objectives; evaluates employee performance and makes recommendations impacting employee status, including retention, advancement, discipline and termination.
Obtains and provides reports on the statistical data on all tourism activities so appropriate decisions can be made to direct the marketing and destination management efforts.
Utilizes research and data analysis to establish key performance indicators in order to provide input on strategy, and share findings with the City Administrator, City Council, Tourism Advisory Committee and key stakeholders.
Sets performance metrics for the department and implementation of the Tourism Strategy of the City.
Tourism Leadership: Conducts stakeholder engagement to advocate for strategic partnerships to provide leadership for all tourism efforts; acts as a liaison between public and private stakeholders (i.e. Tourism Advisory Committee (TAC); U.S. Forest Service; Bureau of Land Management (BLM); private property owners; Law Enforcement; Ouray Recreation and Conservation Alliance (ORCA); Ouray Chamber; tour groups; Montrose/Ridgway/Ouray Tourism Group; City departments; Colorado Tourism Office (CTO); Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade).
Fosters strategic partnerships by working with outside entities on the production of TV commercials, future events and the creation of media content.
Researches and remains relevant on best practices, current impacts from tourists, and the immediate and future needs of our tourism related activities.
Write and manage tourism related grants opportunities.
Tourism Promotion: Assists in creating and maintaining the City’s brand identity to ensure messaging, a similar look/feel across all tourism media platforms and logo use to promote attractions.
Utilize various digital channels to share authentic stories of Ouray that align with target markets.
Implements public relations through marketing, promotion activities to create winter tourism expansion and media coordination.
Manages the Lodging Occupation Tax (LOT) Tourism Funding grant events/recipients to ensure proper use of funding and successful activities.
Maintains digital marketing through managing content creation (photo and video) for the promotion of City based events and activities through the VisitOuray Facebook, Instagram, Website, YouTube, TikTok and VisitOuray Phone Application.
Oversees the creation of digital media guides, brochures, maps and product development through the Visitors Center staff.
Conducts asset management through the City’s media platforms, ad content and outside agency memberships to ensure streamlined marketing campaigns to attract low‐impact travelers.
Coordinates with local businesses on large group events and free advertisement opportunities through the assistance of the Main Streets Program Coordinator.
Destination Management: Develops, implements and maintains the VisitOuray Phone Application.
Creates and implements best practice communications for everyone in the community to ensure consistent answers to tourist-based questions.
Encourages responsible recreation development and stewardship for the betterment of Ouray’s residents and its public lands through direct communications with the Ouray Recreation and Conservation Alliance (ORCA), Main Streets Program, 6 Basins, law enforcement, Ouray County, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Friends of the Ouray Via Ferrata, Ouray Ice Park Inc., and city departments to help control “overtourism and the instagram effect” through consistent messaging and partnerships.
Manages the Visitors Center information resources through the Visitor Center Coordinator, Customer Service Associates and volunteer positions to ensure adequate materials are available; ensure consistent messaging, advertisement of our businesses equally and helping to manage our local resources (i.e. backcountry safety, jeep trails; hiking trails; Ouray businesses; asset promotion).
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from college with a bachelor’s degree in tourism management or marketing or a closely related field;
AND
B. Five (5) years of responsible experience performing above or related duties;
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of previous management experience and demonstrated skill in destination development or placemaking program planning; well-versed in the art of project management for simultaneous projects and assignments; extensive knowledge of current practices around destination marketing, management and development, guest services and sustainable tourism; and, mountain-based destinations, outdoor recreation, cultural heritage tourism and community relations are strongly preferred; budget development and management.
Considerable Skill in the art of diplomacy and cooperative problem solving; knowledge and experience working with public sector stakeholders; and, basic rural economic development concepts, current marketing theories, and small business strategies.
Ability to communicate with strong oral and written skills that include the demonstrated ability to edit and write; have excellent time management skills, including the demonstrated ability to meet timelines and prioritize multiple projects; foster and maintain relationships with a diverse population of organizations, associations, and interest groups; work with a wide variety of people at all levels in stressful situations and exercise confidentiality and discretion as appropriate; create long-range planning; attend and represent the City at local and off-site tourism related events; prepare and present budget estimates; enforce regulations with fairness, tact, and impartiality; establish and maintain effective relationship with co-workers, other government entities, local businesses, the public, and elected officials; develop and maintain effective working relationships with federal agencies, state agencies, local governments, subordinates, and the public.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid Colorado State Driver’s License.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $87,000.00 – $102,000.00 per year
