Division Overview:
The Montana Forensic Science Division (FSD) is an internationally accredited state Forensic Laboratory, processing many varieties of crime scene evidence received from law enforcement agencies across the great state of Montana. FSD’s mission is to provide accurate, objective, and timely forensic analysis in support of the Montana criminal justice community.
Department of Justice employs more than 35 FSD forensic analysts who complete amazing work such as: identifying mysterious powders or pills, determining quantities of various substances in a person’s body, extracting DNA from a blood stain, matching fired bullets to the gun, or finding fingerprints on ATM machine, to name just a few examples.
The FSD is also home to the State Medical Examiner’s office. More than 700 autopsies are performed each year in Missoula and Billings to determine cause and manner of death in unattended or suspicious circumstances. The Montana State Crime Lab proudly serves the criminal justice community and the people of Montana.
Job Overview:
The Toxicologist (Forensic Scientist I-III) prepares reports and records based upon chemical analysis of alcohol, drugs, and toxic substances in human specimens. The Toxicologist typically performs work in an accredited laboratory and joins a team of forensic scientists who practice particular safety precautions while working with hazardous materials. Toxicologists may be called upon by federal, state and local courts to provide expert testimony based on the analytical results obtained and the interpretation of those results in cases analyzed. The Toxicologist conducts research and method validations; may conduct case reviews; meets continuing education requirements; may train law enforcement officers; and present information and performs other job-related duties appropriate to the laboratory’s mission. The work environment is professional, fun and collaborative, and located in the lovely Missoula, MT community.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Natural Science (Preference in Chemistry, Toxicology, Biochemistry, or Biology) or Applied Science (Forensic Science, Medical Sciences). Required coursework includes 16 hours of chemistry, one analytical course (analytical chemistry, instrumental analysis, quantitative analysis, etc.), and one interpretive course (biochemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications
Current certification in area of expertise.
One or more years’ experience performing casework in an accredited lab.
Successful completion of an accredited laboratory training program.
Qualified to testify in court.

Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
