Are you interested in anatomy, pathology or forensics? Join the Office of the Medical Examiner (OME) with the Utah Department of Health as an Autopsy Assistant by supporting the Medical Examiners with autopsies and external examinations of decedents. The Office of the Medical Examiner operates on a seven day work week which includes a rotating schedule for weekends and holidays. The daily schedule will be typically 7:00 am to 3:30 pm but might begin at 6:30 am occasionally. In addition to these work times you must be able to handle unpleasant and disturbing images and odors while performing, and being around autopsies, be able to lift at least 50 pounds (while working actively for extended periods), and have a knowledge of medical terminology. Due to the nature of this position, compliance with the Utah Department of Health Employee Immunization policy is required and continued employment is contingent on passing a background check. Principal Duties As an Autopsy Assistant you will support and assist in the autopsy area of the OME. This includes:

Preparing, performing, and cleaning up of external examinations and autopsies.
Documenting by photograph and x-ray of pertinent findings.
Collecting tissues and samples for toxicology testing, cultures, research studies, and special testing.
Receiving and releasing decedent to and from appropriate agencies.
Taking inventory and documenting personal effects and evidence.
Entering data into a database for pertinent investigation information.
Coordinating with funeral homes, law enforcement, staff, and tissue recovery agencies.
Maintaining good working relationships with outside agencies.
Instructing residents, medical students, and new staff while complying with policy and procedures.
Lifting, transferring, and positioning individuals correctly using approved lifting techniques and procedures.
Taking fingerprints using traditional ink.
Ensuring there is an adequate supply of autopsy materials available.
Ordering, receiving, inspecting, and storing equipment, materials, and/or supplies.

The Ideal Candidate

Has over 4 years of education and/or experience related to anatomy, physiology, biology, pathology, and/or medical training.
Is able to perform medical procedures.
Has knowledge of rules of evidence and chain of custody.
Is an independent quick learner, anticipates tasks to be completed, and is well organized.
Has a strong and trusted work ethic, and be able to work with limited or no supervision.
Is able to work well with others including common sense problem resolution.
Has a knowledge of blood borne pathogen precautions.

Standard Schedule: The daily schedule will be typically 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday but will need to begin at 6:30 am occasionally. Rotating Weekend and holiday work is required.
Physical Requirements

This job requires physical exertion. You may be required to stand for long periods of time. In addition, you may be required to bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, or lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner or for long periods of time.
