The Foundation:
The Lumpkin Family Foundation is based in Mattoon, Illinois. With assets of $60M, The Foundation awards more than $3M a year in support of organizations working towards healthy, sustainable communities. The Foundation has a history of deep community engagement and strong grantee relationships, especially in east central Illinois. We seek a Chicago-based program officer to support the philanthropic objectives of local Lumpkin family members and to grow our grant-making in Chicagoland.
The Position:
The Chicago Program Officer (CPO) is responsible for all current and new programs in the greater Chicago-land area. They are the lead relationship-builder and liaison between Chicago grantees and The Foundation.
Working closely with local family members and reporting to the Executive Director, the CPO will oversee an expanding portfolio that currently includes three programs, two directed at the Austin and North Lawndale neighborhoods. Current programs promote access to healthy food, environmental education and sustainable community development in high-need areas of the city. The incumbent is also responsible for researching new programs and uncovering funding opportunities aligned with other local member interests such as access to mental health care among the area’s most vulnerable. Finally, the CPO’s key duties include a small but influential grantmaking program directed at improving federal food policy.
The Chicago Program Officer contributes to The Foundation’s overall operations and internal systems. As part of a small team, the CPO may be called upon for support of programs in East Central Illinois, Illinois, our homebase.
Responsibilities:
Grantmaking:

Investigates grant requests, conducts site visits, and collects relevant information necessary for a thorough review of grant proposals.
Evaluates all aspects of proposals, including analyzing financial data, sources of funding, organization goals, and plans.
Prepares summaries of proposals, recommends action, and presents recommendations to members and/or relevant decision-making committees or the board.
Leads relationship-building in Chicagoland, communicating with applicants and grantees and others in a timely and effective manner, seeking and providing information necessary to the grantmaking process.
Undertakes special studies/projects they deem important or as requested by the Executive Director or local members.

Program Management, Development and Leadership:

Researches new mission and program areas, and proactively identifies prospective grantees who match the interests of local family members.
In consultation with the community, establishes priorities, strategies, programs, and network-building activities that enhance organizational capacity among our Chicagoland grantees.
Designs, manages, and oversees training and development programs targeted at grantees and partners in the region.
Represents The Foundation in the philanthropic community, participating in activities that contribute to the overall effectiveness of staff, trustees, members and grantees.
Develops and implements evaluation tools to determine impact and to support continuous learning, and works with colleagues on all aspects of evaluation.

Administration:

Develops program and activity budgets and plans as necessary.
Coordinates and facilitates committees as assigned.
Develops and implements team learning opportunities for members and staff.
Works with staff to maintain the integrity of our online grant database and organizational records.

Competencies:
The ideal candidate will be experienced in philanthropy or nonprofit organizations and possess knowledge of, experience in, and deep passion for our mission. The candidate will be a strategic thinker with an equity mindset who shares The Foundation’s values – most especially, enthusiasm for learning and sharing knowledge. They will understand the privilege that working in philanthropy confers, and bring humility and deep listening skills to working with family, staff and the communities we serve.
Working Environment:

The position is based in Chicago but otherwise remote, with occasional Mattoon home-office visits and statewide travel.
This is a full-time position whose normal hours are 8-5 M-F, but our policy permits flex-time options; attendance at events in the evening and on weekends is occasionally required.
A valid drivers license is required for local and statewide travel.
