Position Description
Crisis Responder
Full Time
Reports to: Crisis Response Manager
General: Chicago Survivors is a non-profit organization in Chicago that provides a range of crisis and support services for families of homicide victims in Chicago (https://chicagosurvivors.org/). Crisis Responders are members the Crisis Response Team which provides immediate crisis support 24/7 to families of Chicago homicide victims upon notification by the Chicago Police Department (CPD) that a homicide has occurred. Crisis Responders assist the family with practical needs, safety planning, in the immediate aftermath of the homicide, generally for 3-5 days, and work to engage family members in ongoing Chicago Survivors (CS) services provided by the Family and Youth Support Teams, as well as other program components. Crisis Responders work 12-hour, on-call shifts.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Responds to homicide notification within two (2) hours at a designated location, usually the scene or the hospital, where the victim’s body is located. Interacts with law enforcement officials to establish a line of communication and to gain necessary information.
Using Psychological First Aid and a special youth triage tool, conducts a rapid assessment of family members’ needs. Accompanies family, as needed, through initial steps of dealing with hospitals, trauma units, law enforcement, and the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Performs de-escalations, as needed and conducts retaliation assessments.
Assists with immediate necessities of the surviving family, including retrieval of personal belonging from the crime scene; arrangement of crime scene clean up; safety planning; assistance with funeral planning and application for Crime Victim Compensation; emergency relocation, food and transportation, and other crisis intervention as needed.
Provides informational Family Packets and guidance for the families on victim rights and dealing with media inquiries.
Invites families to engage with Chicago Survivors support services; obtains a signed Service Agreement; and initiates warm transfer of family to the Family Support Team.
Serves as liaison between the family and homicide investigators as needed, and informs families on the process of the homicide investigation, including the facilitation enhancement of communication between the family and law enforcement.
Enters all required family and service data into the CS Electronic Case Management system in a timely manner.
Participates in Team and All-Staff meetings, trainings and annual retreat as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: College degree preferred; high school diploma required. Experience providing crisis or community outreach services, preferably for crime victims; experience in human services or related field; compassion and empathy for victim families; strong communication skills; computer literate; must have a car, current driver’s license, insurance coverage for travel throughout the City.

Pay: $42,000.00 – $47,000.00 per year
