The USC Price Center for Social Innovation invites applications for a Data Analyst to join the Neighborhood Data for Social Change (NDSC) team and to support other data functions of the research center. Launched in October 2017, NDSC is a free, publicly available online resource for civic actors to learn about the trends, challenges, and opportunities facing Los Angeles County neighborhoods. The platform helps tell the stories of L.A. neighborhoods through maps, charts, data analysis, and storytelling, helping community stakeholders track measurable change, improve local policies and programs, and ultimately advocate for a better quality of life within their communities.
The Data Analyst will play a critical role in maintaining and growing NDSC, contributing to all aspects of data collection, management, and analysis for the mapping platform and a diverse set of technical assistance projects with community partners. This is a full-time position.
Primary Responsibilities
Downloads a range of public data sources, maintaining detailed records and research logs, including: U.S. Census Bureau data, other federal datasets, city and county administrative data
Works with graduate research assistants to clean, quality control, and upload data to the Neighborhood Data for Social Change map, USC Area Housing Dashboard and other community-facing data tools
Meets with community partners to identify data needs and conducts short term technical assistance projects
Conducts and quality controls analyses for a range of research products at the research center, including Neighborhood Data for Social Change data stories and reports as well as rapid response research for the Homelessness Policy Research Institute
Represents the Center in webinars and meetings with NDSC partners
Provides ongoing data and research support to Price Center leadership and faculty as needed
Manages graduate research assistants
Conducts trainings on Neighborhood Data for Social Change for community partners
Qualifications
Ideal candidates may have a Master’s Degree in Public Policy, Urban Planning, Economics or related field
2+ years of research experience in an academic, government, or policy setting (part time experience will be considered)
Knowledge of Stata statistical software
Knowledge of and interest in urban policy issues
Strong quantitative data analysis skills
Excellent organizational and project management skills
Excellent attention to detail
Commitment to equity and cultural humility in research
Ability to communicate quantitative findings and complex concepts to a wide range of audiences, in writing and in presentations
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an entrepreneurial applied research setting
Knowledge of geographic information system (GIS) software (e.g., ArcPro) is a plus

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree Minimum Experience: 1 year Minimum Field of Expertise: Proficient PC skills. Strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills.
