The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 107 years ago and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking an Exhibition Designer for our Exhibitions department. The Exhibition Designer works closely with the Director, Exhibitions Production and is responsible for creating inspired design solutions, from schematic design to installation, for exhibit environments and interactives within the Natural History Museum, The La Brea Tar Pits (Page Museum), and The Hart Museum. The Exhibition Designer works within a project team to develop, document, and execute all design related components of gallery installations, in particular graphics production files and construction documents. The Exhibition Designer is accountable for working with other designers within a team environment, adhering to project schedules, obtaining design bids, and consulting with fabricators to create construction documents for permanent and temporary exhibitions, experiences, and a program of mobile museum exhibition trucks. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

Provides operational coordination between exhibition design and fabrication technicians as well as with other staff, volunteers, work study students, interns, and contractors as needed.

Coordinates and participates in all exhibition design related projects in coordination with other Exhibition Staff members.

Works with senior members of the Exhibitions Department, Registrar’s Office, Conservation, Research and Collections, and Operations to prioritize and coordinate design deliverables.

Manages and budgets for existing exhibits and graphic needs in regards to new build and maintenance projects, as required. Designs and produces exhibit documentation, coordinates exhibit project management; and ensures a collaborative process of exhibit development with interdisciplinary teams—including museum exhibits staff, educators, curators, registrars, collections staff and outside consultants. Working with the Director, Senior Manager and/or Supervisor to create exhibition design materials from schematic to installation.

Participates in the prototyping, scheduling, and installation of exhibitions. Is available as representative during installation periods, and is responsive to installation schedules as needed.

This position has the following requirements:

Position requires three years of experience in designing and developing exhibitions and installations, as well as experience designing and implementing environmental graphics. Requires an understanding of design fabrication and experience, a strong ability to multitask, ability to visualize and present a design concept, and an understanding of multiple design disciplines and how they may be integrated into a branded gallery environment.
Bachelor’s degree required in architecture, exhibit, graphic, environmental or product design, or a related field; three years practical field experience considered in lieu of relevant major.
Must be familiar with different production, construction and fabrication methods and material applications within the exhibit and display fields. This experience should include, but not be limited to, methods and technical knowledge of large scale graphics, metal work, mill work, mounts, lighting, multi- media and audio-visual production.
Professional experience with computer aided design and production software (Vectorworks, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite preferred) and rendering programs, including the ability to generate professional drawing sets for internal and external use.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment working with a diverse community. Salary range for this position is $71,000 to $73,000 with experience plus excellent benefits.
This is a full time regular, exempt position.
