Job Description : ConTextos (www.contextos.org) uses the power of personal narrative and art to promote healing and reflection, and to foster critical thinking and dialogue. We seek to lift up the voices and insights of people affected by trauma, and to challenge assumptions, provoke healing and social change. Based in both El Salvador and Chicago, we provide literacy-based programs in public schools, juvenile detention centers, jails and prisons, focusing on individuals at risk of, witness to, and responsible for violence. In Chicago, we work with adults 18-35-year-olds participating in community-based programming and/or in pre-trial detention, and with young people 14-18 navigating the Chicago Public School system.
The Authors Circle is a co-created space for exploration and discovery, that uses reading, writing and engaged dialogue as vehicles for transformation. Participants read as writers as they draft, revise, illustrate and publish their memoirs. Throughout the process, individuals learn to take and accept critical feedback, improve reading and writing skills, and reflect upon the past to imagine a different future. In turn the powerful published memoirs are used as tools for training and advocacy, and help build bridges while complicating prevailing narratives about violence and trauma.
Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Co-Directors of Programs & Partnerships, the Authors Circle Facilitator will co-create Authors Circles and facilitate the Authors Circle curriculum in Chicago.
Essential Functions
Provide support and leadership in writing workshops and instructional support in institutional and community-based programming via a combination of co-teaching and lead-teaching. Authors participating in ConTextos programming have experienced significant complex traumas, have limited exposure to intensive writing opportunities and may be struggling readers.
Work closely with the ConTextos team to prepare for writing workshops, including preparing lessons plans and materials, and to coordinate activities with various teaching-site teams.
Participate in curriculum design and development, both individually and collaboratively.
Demonstrate purpose, flexibility and commitment to our Authors healing, learning and empowerment.
Have high expectations and a strong work ethic, and demonstrate compassion, creativity and commitment to excellence, ethics and integrity; believe strongly in each individuals humanity and ability to thrive.
Meaningful experience working with young people (14-30) who have had negative experiences in traditional schooling, systems and/or institutions.
Demonstrating nuanced understanding of trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning competencies, adult-learning modalities and asset-based frameworks.
Vibrant experience teaching and facilitating groups, though not necessarily in traditional settings.
Well-read and well-written, with a passion for authentic stories and complicating societal narratives.
Strong collaborator and able to work well independently; passionate about community assets and developing caring, respectful relationships; reflective and compassionate with a belief in lifelong learning.
