JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION: Firefighter – Time Limited

GRADE: Hourly plan

STARTING SALARY: $15.00 per hour

OPENING DATE: January 11, 2022

Job Summary Under direction of a Lieutenant or Captain, performs wildland fire suppression, management, and control activities as part of an engine, module, or hand crew. Other wildland fire related duties include fire prevention, patrol, detection, and/or prescribed burning, as well as emergency response to all-risk incidents. Incumbents in this position are under the Wildland Fire Division in the Sheriff’s Office. Applicants must obtain skills through completion of basic wildland courses.

Essential Functions Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Suppress a full range of wildland fires; perform duties as member of a fire department (Crew, Engine, Squad).
Develop a working knowledge of fire suppression and fuel management techniques.
Locate and extinguish burning materials; move dirt and apply water by hose or backpack pump.
Perform hazard fuel reduction projects.
Develop knowledge of how to properly maintain equipment; ensure equipment is always maintained appropriately.
Maintain fire scene safety in accordance with agency policy and jurisdictional guidelines; ensure equipment and tools are available and properly used.
Assist with training programs; provide training and education in wildland fire qualifications.
Assist with inspection and maintenance of fire suppression equipment, including equipment assigned to Utah County by the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands.
Ensure the welfare and safety of self and others in all aspects of assignments; participate in fire and safety training in techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and in the safe and efficient operation of tools, equipment, and vehicles; participate in proficiency checks and drills; participate in safety sessions and fire critiques.
Assist the Emergency Services Division in the Sheriff’s Office; perform related and other non-fire activities.
May be assigned duties from one or more of the following functions:
a. Assist local fire resources, as needed or as assigned.
b. Assist with development and implementation of fire management, fuel management, and fire hazard reduction plans.
c. Respond to wildland fires; request resources for fire suppression operations.

Supervisory Responsibility This position has no direct supervisory responsibility.

Work Environment Work is performed for sustained periods outdoors and occasionally in hot, cold, or inclement weather; Work is performed occasionally in an environmentally controlled room and partially environmentally controlled buildings. This job regularly requires the use of protective devices, such as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) approved Personal Protective Equipment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as a laptop, desktop, smartphone, photocopiers, shredders, and filing cabinets. This position regularly exposes incumbent to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation, and possible bodily injury from heat, smoke, flames, and exhaustion. Incumbent is exposed to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery. Work may occasionally expose incumbent to unknown, dangerous, and/or life-threatening conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. The incumbent may be required to drive Utah County owned vehicles in the course of conducting County business and must abide by the Utah County Vehicle Policy.

Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to use a high degree of manual dexterity to handle, feel, and operate objects, tools and controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly walk, stand, crouch, or run on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The employee regularly carries equipment up and down steep mountainous terrain. The employee must frequently lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. The employee works for sustained periods of time maintaining concentration and attention to detail. Specific vision abilities by this job include close vision, ability to adjust focus, and ability to distinguish between shades of color and patterns. The employee communicates via radios. Applicants must meet the requirements of the Work Capacity Test (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters at the arduous level. Incumbents are required to take and pass this test annually. The employee regularly drives a motor vehicle.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work This position is classified as time limited without benefits. The ability to work irregular shifts, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays is a requirement.

Travel This position may require significant travel within the state and to other states during the fire season. Otherwise, travel is primarily local during the business day, although out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected, up to fifty (50) percent.

Required Education and Experience 1. High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education and Experience 1. Preference may be given to applicants with wildland fire experience. 2. Preference may be given to applicants who have successfully completed advanced training and requirements in wildland fire suppression tactics.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications 1. Applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age prior to start date being issued. 2. Applicants must possess or have the ability to obtain certificates S-130, S-190, and L-180, or Wildland Fire Certification before June 1 or prior to a start date being issued if after June 1. 3. Applicants must have the ability to pass the work capacity test or “pack test” with an arduous rating. This requires successfully completion of three (3) mile walk carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack in under forty-five (45) minutes. 4. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and obtain a valid State of Utah driver’s license within sixty (60) days of employment. 5. Selected applicants will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
