Job Description : The Position

THIS IS AN UNCLASSIFIED, NON-CIVIL SERVICE, HOURLY POSITION WITH NO MEDICAL, DENTAL OR ACCRUED LEAVE BENEFITS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF AB1522 – HEALTHY WORKPLACE HEALTHY FAMILY ACT. THIS POSITION IS BUDGET AND TASK DEPENDENT AND HOURS WORKED MAY VARY WEEK BY WEEK. FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE (TUESDAY THRU FRIDAY AND OCCASIONAL SATURDAYS) WORKING APPROXIMATELY 20 HOURS PER EXHIBITION. Under general supervision, assists in the installation and removal of art work for gallery exhibitions at the Brand Library Art Galleries and Central Library’s ReflectSpace. The nature of this position involves heavy lifting, manual dexterity, and the ability to physically handle delicate, valuable, and irreplaceable art objects with extreme care. Gallery Installer is responsible for gallery preparation and the installation and de-installation of art works for gallery exhibitions and will be required to install and prepare approximately eight exhibitions each year. Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following: Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards. Prepare the walls and gallery for installation, including patching, light painting and cleaning. Safely and knowledgeably handle a variety of art works, framed and unframed (paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures and multi-media works). Hang and install artworks based on a layout designed by Gallery staff and/or artists which may involve climbing ladders and/or scaffolding. Adjust lighting for each exhibition, moving spots on tracks and replacing bulbs. May provide input about layout design and assist with placement of artwork. Prepare and install gallery signage and labels. Load and unload works into receiving areas ensuring safe and proper handling techniques are practiced, including crating and uncrating works. Prepare collection(s) and/or artwork(s) for storage. Oversee and maintain supplies, tools and equipment and notify Gallery Director in advance to order needed supplies. Install exhibitions with attention and eye for detail. Safely fabricate objects onsite with use of small tools. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe efficient manner. Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of and skill in: Exceptional customer service practices. Art handling techniques. Construction methods. Hanging, lighting and painting. Tools and equipment. Ability to: Provide exceptional customer service to those using the Library, Arts & Culture Department. Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct. Communicate effectively in English. Establish and maintain smooth and effective working relationships. Physical stamina needed for climbing ladders and medium to heavy lifting (ability to lift up to 50lbs infrequently). Read, write and comprehend directions in English. Work independently as needed. Work methodically and effectively with others and to accept and carry out instructions. Work within time constraints and deadlines. Other Characteristics Willingness to: Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment; work independently and take initiative as needed Be extremely reliable and dependable, with great interpersonal skills. Work overtime and flexible hours that are not consistent and are based on exhibition schedule and operational needs. Experience One year of previous experience in handling and installing professional gallery or museum exhibitions. Education High School Diploma or its equivalent. A Bachelor’s Degree in Art History, Fine Arts, Crafts or Museum Studies is desirable. License Valid Class C California driver’s license required. Note An equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training may substitute for the listed minimum requirements. Selection Process
EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: All applications, resumes and submitted reference materials will be reviewed and evaluated and only the best-qualified candidates based on applicable experience will be invited to the selection process.
ORAL INTERVIEW: (Weight of 100%) To evaluate the applicant’s experience, education, and general background for the position.
TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. Any evaluation will be based on the candidate’s education and experience as related to the position. Any examination will be to evaluate the candidate’s education, experience, knowledge and skills for the position. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the above stated examination components and/or weights. Should this be necessary, the candidates will be notified of the specific examination components and weights prior to the administration of any examination. The selected candidate will be subjected to a background check including Livescan fingerprinting.
