THE POSITION:
An Instructional Aide for Students Who Are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
assists by presenting educational materials and exercises related to
classroom instruction to students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing.
The work schedule/calendar for this position is approximately 10 months
a year, August through June, and 6-6.5 hours per day.
We are currently recruiting for Instructional Aide for Students who Are
Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing-Signing positions throughout the District;
however we have active needs for in the Central, North-East and
North-West areas of the District.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS:

Experience working in a classroom setting assisting students who are

deaf or hard-of-hearing;

An understanding of the unique needs and issues pertinent to students

who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and the deaf community;

Demonstrated ability to communicate fluently in sign language;

Ability to follow directions given from the teachers and take initiatives

when needed.

Flexibility to also provide instructional support in a general education

mainstream setting.
TYPICAL DUTIES INCLUDE:

Assisting students with limited language abilities in developing

communication skills such as sign language, speech reading and
English;

Assisting a teacher or other certificated employee in a school by

presenting educational materials and exercises related to classroom
instruction;

Tutoring in academic, vocational, and related subjects;

Assisting and instructing students in the use of books, materials,

equipment and adaptive devices;

Assisting in adapting training aids and classroom equipment for use by

students;

Operating audio-visual equipment and using other materials and

methods to present educational material to students.
Benefits BENEFITS

Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS).
Vacation: Two weeks of paid vacation to start. Three weeks after five
years of year-round paid service.
Paid Holidays: Up to 13 days and paid ill time.
NOTE: Positions in this job classification may be offered on a “B” basis,
approx. 10 month basis – salary and paid time off for will be adjusted
accordingly.
Minimum Requirements EDUCATION: In compliance with the Every Student Succeeds Act
(ESSA) of 2015 and other related legislation, candidates for this
classification must meet the following standards:
Paraprofessionals who provide instructional assistance are required to
pass the District Proficiency Test and possess a high-school diploma* or
equivalent and one of the following.
(1) Completion of 48 semester units or 72 quarter units from a
recognized college or university; OR
(2) Possession of an associate or higher degree, from a recognized
college or university*; OR
(3) A passing score on the Instructional Assistant Test
Please Note: A passing score on the California Basic Educational Skills
Test (CBEST) may be substituted for the District Proficiency Test in the
options listed above. Please inquire for more information.
Additionally, please UPLOAD the required documents (transcripts and
diplomas) above to your application. Note: ORIGINAL educational
documents will be required in the event that a candidate is successful in
the employment test and hired by LAUSD.
Successful candidates who are unable to provide all required documents

will be withheld from the list of eligible candidates until all documents
have been submitted.
Note: To verify the education requirement an original diploma or official
transcript of coursework and high school diploma must be UPLOAD
(under the “Attachment” tab) as part of your application.

Candidates who have completed college, university or high school

course work at an institution in a country other than the United States,
must obtain a complete evaluation of foreign transcripts and degrees.

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year*** of experience as an interpreter,
instructional aide, or a special education assistant in an education
program for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing.
Eight (8) semester units* from a recognized college or university in deaf
studies including courses in audiology, speech and language, sign
language interpretation, and/or transliteration may be substituted for the
required experience.
PLEASE NOTE: ***For the purpose of this assessment, full-time
experience is defined as approx. 10 months per year, 30 hours per week.
Any part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent
when determining if candidates meet the minimum requirements for this
position.
SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Manual dexterity to produce readable sign language through movement

of fingers and arms.

Visual acuity to see information communicated (such as sign language

and facial expressions.)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Proficiency in the use of sign language or oral interpretation as

appropriate to the class is required.

A First Aid Certificate ISSUED by the American Red Cross MUST be

obtained within 60 DAYS after appointment and must be kept current.

A valid California Driver License and use of an automobile may be

required for some positions.

Employment Selection Process Candidates who meet the minimum requirements for both education and
experience will be invited to participate in a Technical Interview.
This assessment may consist a technical project and interview. The
assessment will evaluate candidates’ receptive/and or expressive sign language skills. Successful candidates from the first assessment part will
move forward to the interview portion on the same day. The Interview
portion includes an assessment that evaluates candidates’ expressive sign language skills. The Technical Interview is worth 100% of
candidates’ overall assessment score.
Testing dates have not yet been established; however, candidates will be
notified via email once dates are confirmed.
