Job Description : Duties
The position functions to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and productivity of the Maintenance and Operations Section and to perform numerous tasks which are dissimilar in kind, but which have in common the purpose of completing the work of one or more trade persons in the section, as part of Engineering Service maintenance & repair procedures. Major Duties: Plumbing

Installing escutcheons, plunge toilets, auger toilets, repairs faucets, shower heads and other piping repair/replacement within the facility

Carpentry

Changing ceiling tiles, install drain tiles holes and trenches, demolish walls and ceiling grids, removing and installing vinyl base cove.
Assist with assembly and setup equipment such as six foot fixed or rolling scaffolding, ladders, ladder jacks, and stretch boards for tradesmen.
Installs signage assemblies, signs posts, and erects display for exterior signage and wooden and plastic road barriers, throughout campus grounds.
Assemble warehouse type racks and shelving and construction of warehouse type crates for shipping.
Assembly and repairs, and installs various types of office furniture such as desks, cabinets walls unites, file cabinets, tables, shop carts.
Prepare surfaces by methods such as sanding and wire brushing

Painting

Thin, stir, and mix coating materials according to specific directions, then apply various coating materials with brushes, rollers, spray guns, and other related methods and techniques, and see that the coating finish meets surface protection requirements.
Understand and safely use tools of carpenter, painter, mason, plasterer and locksmith as necessary.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, which may include occasional weekend overtime. Due to the mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the hospital must be manned continuously and cannot be closed. When a Federal holiday falls on a weekday, staff may be required to work on that holiday due to time constraints on projects or availability of the space. Staff will be required to work overtime on weekends, after hours on a duty day, and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the VA mission. Occasionally, staff may be called back to the facility due to an emergency for overtime work. The Staff’s schedule may be changed to meet the needs of the VA Mission and Hospital with a two week notice of tour change.

Physical Requirements: The work requires a considerable amount of walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may work from ladders and scaffolding. When operating equipment, the worker may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching, bending, turning, and moving of carries, lifts, and handles parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and may occasionally exceed 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area may be dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles.
