Job Description : Responsibilities:

The Responsibilities of the Finance Department Meter Reader position is to read water meters and record consumption and other duties as follows:

Read water meters in assigned area using computerized meter reading equipment; record readings and make necessary calculations.
Determine consistency of meter readings; ensure that meters are registering properly; report to supervisor on meter conditions, defects or suspicious conditions.
Verify misreads or high consumption readings.
Operate and maintain various Village vehicles and portable phones in a safe and appropriate manner.
Assist with a variety of cashier work including filing and data entry.
Perform cashier and related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications:

Knowledge
:

The person should have or be ready to learn:

General operational characteristics of water meters.
Pertinent policies, procedures, and ordinances.
Safe work practices.
Basic arithmetic principles.

Ability to
:

The person must demonstrate the following abilities:

Learn to read a variety of water meters.
Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records.
Deal tactfully with the public.
Identify and learn to repair minor water meter irregularities.
Perform basic arithmetic calculations.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Physical Conditions
:

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities
which may include the following:

Walking or standing for extended periods of time
Operating assigned equipment.
Lifting up to 50 pounds.

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

Making observations
Communicating with others
Operating assigned equipment and vehicle.

Education
:

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent and be able to perform basic math calculations when performing cashier duties. Preference may be given to Bellwood residents that have the required qualifications.

License or Certificate
:

Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions
:

Field environment; exposure to dust, noise and inclement weather conditions; may be exposed to domestic animals and insects.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent with some water meter reading experience. Must be able to perform basic math calculations; have the ability to read, record, and accurately enter water meter readings. Current driver’s license with good driving record is required. Preference may be given to Bellwood residents that have the required qualifications.
