HIGHLANDS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT JOB POSTING

Hourly Range: $21.24 – $30.24 Status: Full-time, Non-exempt

SUMMARY

Under the general supervision and direction of the Parks Manager, this position performs skilled
and semi-skilled functions related to the maintenance of the Highlands Special Improvement
District (“District”).

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May exercise technical and functional oversight of contractors and/or parks maintenance staff
performing work in the District.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Assist in determining priorities and objectives for the city-maintained properties in the
District.

Perform and record scheduled and random inspections of equipment, properties, and service
levels.

Prepare and maintain, all required reports related to landscape maintenance, safety,
contractor performance, and pesticides.

Maintain and repair parks related systems and equipment, including irrigation, playgrounds,
and pavilions.

Perform full range of skilled turf and irrigation maintenance and installation duties.
Perform snow removal of assigned parks and facilities.
Manage pest control of sites and grounds, including the preparation and application of
pesticides.

Act as the liaison for the property owners and the City regarding the District, focusing on
customer service and building a sense of community.

Participate in the on-call rotation for off-hour duties.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or GED
Specialized training in landscaping maintenance and repair, horticulture, contract
administration, or a related field.

Possession of, or ability to obtain the Purdue University Integrated Pest Management course
within 24 months of employment in the position.

Experience: Four (4) years of responsible parks maintenance and repair experience, including skills
in contract administration.

Certifications/Licenses:

Possession of, or ability to obtain a Utah Commercial Driver’s License within six months of
employment in the position.

Possession of, or ability to obtain a Utah Pesticide Applicator License, 10-hour OSHA
safety training, First Aid/CPR training, LTAP communication training; and completion of
snow removal simulator training within 12 months of employment in the position.

Probationary Period: Six-month probation period as of date of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Contracts, record keeping and inspections.
Workflow and prioritization principles.
Parks, trails, and open space maintenance programs.
Repair and maintenance of irrigation systems.
Application and use of pesticides.
Equipment, tools, and materials used in parks, trails, and open space maintenance.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Watering requirements for lawns, trees, and plants in various types of soil.
Safe driving principles and practices.

Skill with:

Operating equipment and tools used in parks maintenance, landscaping, construction, and
repair work safely and efficiently.

Applying pesticides in accordance with the laws, regulations, and safety guidelines; including
the maintenance of appropriate records associated with such applications.

Operating a motor vehicle safely.
Performing intermediate level of computer proficiency.
Understanding purchasing policies and procedures.

Ability to:

Plan, organize, and review the work requirements for the District.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all types of weather.
Work unconventional hours and be subject to 24-hour on-call as required for the city snow
removal program or emergency operations.

Understand complex principles in turf management, tree, and shrub care, weed control, and
water efficiency standards.

Interpret and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations for the city-
maintained properties in the District.

Communicate in a professional, clear, and concise manner, both verbally and in writing.
Prepare and maintain records and reports using computer software programs.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Respond to requests and inquiries from the public.
Establish, maintain, and foster positive working relationships with those contacted in the
course of work.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to sit, stand, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50 lbs.; exposure
to inclement weather, noise, outdoors, confining workspace, chemicals, dust, mechanical hazards,
and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
