Salary Range: $22.08-$28.05/hour*Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for range.
Schedule: Mon-Fri hours 5-11pm; Sat-Sun hours 3-11pm3-4 evenings per week, including at least one weekend shift.
NATURE OF WORK: This Park Ranger is responsible for patrolling parks, beaches and special events throughout the City. Work involves educating, influencing and convincing citizens to follow rules and requirements. Work includes light park maintenance and cleaning, rule enforcement and documenting incidents. The Park Ranger will be subject to work night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Safety equipment such as safety glasses, reflective vest, gloves, steel-toed shoes, earplugs and other protective equipment may be worn, based on task.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

Patrols parks, beaches and special events throughout the City; informs public of rules, regulations and programs; checks for locked doors, proper lighting and related building security issues at parks, recreation centers and shelters.
Checks safety conditions of park facilities and records areas that need to be repaired.
Explains and enforces park policies and regulations.
Distributes information to park patrons on programs and/or activities.
Performs light custodial, maintenance, and repair work.
Maintains records of park activities and prepares reports.
May appear in court when required or may be called to assist police calls and report findings.
Operates vehicle, sometimes with a trailer attached, to deliver equipment and travel between different sites.
Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

Must possess a high school diploma or GED. College coursework in law enforcement, recreation administration, or parks/forestry is preferred.
Two (2) or more years of work experience in security, park patrol, or similar position is preferred.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
Must be willing and able to obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within 3 months of employment and maintain them as a condition of employment.

Knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:

Knowledge of city and department ordinances, rules, regulations, policies and procedures guiding park usage and special event occasions.
Knowledge of proper procedures in managing park visitors and handling emergencies.
Ability to interpret ordinances, rules and regulations.
Ability to educate and influence citizens in a manner consistent with the ordinances, rules, regulations, policies and procedures guiding park usage and special event occasions.
Ability to explain the services provided by the department.
Ability to communicate effectively with the public under sometimes hostile circumstances.
Ability to communicate effectively over a radio
Ability to write clear, concise, and accurate citations.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate incident records.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

Ability to walk for long periods of time.
Requires the ability to see, hear, speak.
Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly.
Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Must possess good color and depth perception.
Ability to work on feet, stand, and walk around and monitor and scan events, facilities, parks, and fields for maintenance needs.
Ability to work outdoors, regularly, in a variety of weather conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures and humidity.
Environmental conditions include performing activities both inside and outside; no environmental hazards indicated
Occasionally exposed to potentially dangerous situations.

SUPERVISION: Work is performed under the general direction of a supervisor, and receives general directions and assignments. Patrol assignments are generally received in the form of desired objectives and the employee is expected to complete assignments without detailed supervision. Judgment is required in interpreting and adapting guidelines to specific cases or problems. The employee is responsible for completing work according to City work rules and safety regulations. Work is reviewed through ongoing observation, written and verbal communications, meetings and feedback from the supervisor and from other department employees. Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, Unified Work Rules, Union Contract, Personnel Rules and OSHA. Additional guidance is provided through City and departmental policies, procedures and ordinances. Work is evaluated at least annually for the safe and skilled operation of equipment, quality of tasks, adherence to work rules, and performance in accordance with classification standard.
PUBLIC CONTACT: The employee has significant contact with the general public and needs strong public relations and interpersonal skills to educate and influence the public, and when handling all situations, including emergencies.
