Job Description : The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is in the heart of downtown Los Angeles and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. USC is consistently ranked among the nation’s most prestigious universities, and the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology features one of the world’s best degree and research programs in gerontology. The school has an international reputation as a hub of aging research and, with additional strong programs throughout the university, leads the way in defining and advancing the field of gerontology.
The Laboratory of Dr. Sean Curran in the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology is seeking a highly motivated and organized Research Lab Technician II to join its team. The Curran Lab’s long-term goal is to generate blueprints that allow an individual to maximize health over the course of their lifespan. Informed by genetics, they develop the capacity to predict which diets are ideal for a healthy life and which should be avoided. Our research has benefited from the ability to quickly test several diet-gene pairs in C. elegans, which has allowed us to transition to directed studies in murine models. Although we will continue to exploit the utility of genetics and biochemistry of the worm, we expect that our mouse and cultured human cell approaches will synergize and provide relevant information for human aging.
This position will provide essential laboratory assistance to support research activities including media preparation, lab organization, supply ordering, general lab function, and maintenance. The research lab tech will also serve as the mouse colony manager and will oversee mouse husbandry, general physiological measurements, ensure diet-food compliance, and assist on occasion with mammalian studies. The research lab tech must also be available to provide assistance to researchers on their current lab projects
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a molecular biology lab or have course experience with measurements and basic lab operations. Experience working with a mouse model or mouse colony (breeding, feeding, handling) is of great importance. They must also be able to interact with a medium-size group and be adaptable to meet the needs of the lab as needed. Strong organization, attention to detail, and scheduling skills are essential.
Work schedule: 40 hours per week, primarily Monday-Friday. Could be asked to come in on weekends when research requires. Work location is on University Park Campus with minimal training at the Health Sciences Campus (department or animal resources).
Benefits include a competitive salary, a rich array of USC benefits including healthcare (including dental and vision), 403(b), tuition reimbursement, national holidays, paid vacation, and more. This is a full-time salaried position that will require substantial commitment and flexibility.
USC is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law or USC policy. USC will consider for employment all qualified applicants with criminal histories in a manner consistent with the requirements of the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring ordinance.
