Position : Safety Coordinator
Job Description : The City of Pasadena is seeking a dedicated and hardworking industrial safety professional to support the citywide Safety Program. This position will perform a variety of professional assignments in support of Citywide safety and environmental health programs to ensure compliance with applicable workplace safety and environmental regulations. Responsibilities will include ability to make field inspections and conduct investigations; detect unsafe conditions and practices; interpret and apply Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and applicable provisions of the Labor Code. The Safety Coordinator makes reports of findings and recommendations, develops, and conducts a variety of safety training programs for employees. The incumbent is expected to independently carry out assigned program responsibilities, projects and activities and perform duties with a significant degree of initiative, independence and judgment. IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will possess strong professional and technical occupational health and safety experience; takes initiative, is comfortable with enforcing safety policies and practices through all levels of the organization, strong communications skills to effectively and clearly communicate in oral and written communications the appropriate health and safety information, and has the personal effectiveness to follow through and complete assignments and meet deadlines; and the self-management ability to prioritize tasks, work assignments and adjust to changing priorities, especially in emergency situations. Essential Functions

Ability to objectively interpret and apply rules and regulations; gather and analyze data; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; have knowledge of safety principles and effectively apply such knowledge; prepare clear and concise reports; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; learn rapidly. Performs ergonomic evaluations of employee work settings; evaluates workplace and equipment layouts and lighting; makes recommendations to resolve any problems or issues identified including any needed equipment accommodations/modifications.
Conducts special and periodic inspections of a variety of City sites, facilities and operations, including construction and public access venues/special event sites, to identify safety and environmental hazards and compliance liabilities; performs job safety analyses of facilities, equipment, work areas and work practices; may perform periodic special inspections involving potential workplace environmental hazards; prepares reports and documentation of findings and recommendations for action; may follow up to ensure action is taken on safety and other notices and recommendations.
Develops, coordinates and/or conducts assigned training classes and programs in a variety of safety and environmental health areas; reviews documentation of safety training conducted in departments to ensure mandated safety training requirements are being met; conducts assigned safety meetings; attends a variety of safety-related department and committee meetings as departmental representative.
Performs research and special projects as assigned; maintains a variety of records and files related to the work; prepares reports and other written materials.
Conducts research and drafts policies and procedures related to employee health and safety.
May act in the absence of the Safety Officer.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, and
Four years of increasingly responsible professional or technical experience in identifying, evaluating, and controlling safety hazards in work places, and developing, evaluating, and implementing occupational health standards.
Desirable Qualifications:
Four years or more experience in occupational employee health and safety.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The tentative selection process will consist of a training and experience evaluation, a panel interview, and a department-level interview.

Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one year probationary work period.
Special Requirements
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license and comply with the City’s Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment. The incumbent may be required to respond to emergency calls and situations after hours and on holidays or weekends. Fieldwork is required, including working in outdoor weather conditions subject to extreme heat or cold; near moving mechanical parts; near moving equipment; and near heavy traffic. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to loud or prolonged noise, and equipment with heavy vibrations. As of September 3, 2021, anyone hired with the City of Pasadena must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before starting work. The City encourages applicants to get a free vaccination at a place of their choice or at walk-in clinics in Pasadena. A candidate’s vaccination status will be reviewed as part of the post-offer pre-employment physical examination. Exemptions to the mandatory vaccination policy may be available for a medical, disability, or sincerely held religious belief.
